Sutter Hall Dining.
It's a new building, a new dining hall it's pretty cool place. They got
a buffet going. You can have any type of food any night. First of all they have a salad bar which is
fantastic
That is there all day everyday. And if you don't like salad they have every
other types of food you can imagine.
One day they had fried macaronni and cheese. It was absolutely great, you would think
it's not, but it's so amazing.
There
oven fired pizza is amazing as well.
It's just lot of
food, and the chefs there put a lot of time into cooking the food for the students. Sutter Hall is really
nice because they give you a lot more choices.
I am a vegitarian so it's a lot easier to find more vegetarian options there.
It's a great
place for residence to relax and
have a great time and just talk to each other.
Brian is talking about Chico State's recently open
residential dining center
located on the ground floor of Sutter Hall.
It was built with an eye towards modern dietary knowledge, a conciousness of delicous
modern cuisine, and a kind of a dining room for our residents.
Everything about it was meant to bring students together, in friendship, while
enjoying
nutritious
and delicious foods.
there's not much point in a beatiful new dining facility if the food is just so-so.
Lucky for our residents, the food at the dining center is fantastic.
What excites me about Sutter Dining is
are ability to
handmake items. We are
handrolling our tamales and
handrolling toquitos; bringing a fresher product to the table
instead of orderig that stuff from the outside
sources. We are raising the bar. Teaching the employees
how to do it the right way and the freshest way possible. The thought processes when
we created the menus
was kind of international where we have Mediterranean
we have Asian, with the Japanese, Chinese
Hawaiian, Indian, Southwestern, Mexican,
deep south American,
and just
classic American foods.
We're cooking the freshest food possible
doing over a couple thousand meals a day. We are making fresh sauces we are
getting the freshest ingredients. All the produce is from Northern California
We do get produce in the spring, summer, and fall
from our university farms here on campus. During spring
we will have turnips, fresh springs mixed greens.
In the summertime a lot of tomatoes, cucumbers,
melons, honeydew, watermelon, cantelope,
a lot of fresh garlic,
and red onions.
Towards the fall
we receive butternut squashes. What I want people to know about Sutter Dining is
that our cooks and service staff are committed
to serving and cooking the freshest food possible.
The Sutter Dining Center as a facility and our student dining meal plans are organized around twenty
first century cuisines
and exceed the expectations of our students. Sutter Residential Dining Center serves
nineteen meals weekly in an all-you-care-to-eat format. You can get the full details
from your living-in handbook and the University Housing website.
Suffice to say,
we've created this new dining system to offer students a wide variety
of many choices. Sutter Residential Dining Center is a marche dining
enviroment with 5 food options or platforms, displaying entre cooking that is
highly interactive between chef and diner.
Implicit in choosing marche, as a word to define our new dining center,
is not only its open
kitchen concept, but also the freshness of the ingredients used for our food.
Our food choices celebrate flavor, and support our local
community without compromising air,
water, or soil.
Outside of the food and drink and the fun that can be seen at Sutter Residential Dining
Center, there's a little bit of the future too. Sutter Hall was built with
sustainability in mind.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED,
is an internationally-recognized green building certification system designed
by the US Green Building Council.
Sutter had been built to LEED certification standards.
That's the technology, building materials,
design and mechanical systems, but that's not the heart of the enterprise.
I think it's great that Sutter Hall has been pushed to be sustainable because it's important
for us to take responsibility for keeping our enviroment alive.
I think the Sutter sustainability program is quite good. As Resident Advisors
we definitely
preach
recycling
as much as possible and I think that's a great thing. We are trying to be as much of
a zero waste facility as possible. We also have a pulper and a disposal system
so any food waste that our customers don't eat
gets put through the disposal to put to the pulper and gets sent out to the university
farms an is used as compost
all of our paper products are all
compostable and all sustainable, as well as all of our plastic products that we carry.
We like people
the students that come to the dining center to know
about our sustainability, to know that we want to be a zero waste facility that it is an all you
can eat facility, but
we would them to take what they can eat and not waste food so that
we could be more sustainable and more of a
zero waste facility. It not only takes us and our menu planning
and our ordering, but it also takes the students being aware of what they are taking
and what they are throwing away to help us be sustainable also
Each semester students will have 180
block meal plan to use at their convenience, throughout the semester.
The cost of this meal plan, about 12 meals per week,
is included in the traditional residence hall rate. Also included in the residents hall
student food program
is Sutter Cafe,
a grab'n'go eatery, serving pizza, salads,
deli sandwiches and other snacks.
It's open until midnight Sunday through Thursday.
Students arriving on campus today, can look forward to a different lifestyle when
compared to previous generations.
Sutter Hall Dining is an amazing asset, an amazing addition to Chico State and the
residence halls.
The food is great, the atmosphere as well as
just the seating arrangements and everything about it is just more open more
relaxed. I think Sutter Dining is great, I've been here
for four years now and
finally having a dining facility that I look forward to
going to
everyday and look forward to trying every dish that they have available. I think,
is a great thing. The architecture
is definitely different, but
it's fun and exciting as well
It's definitely going to be an amazing place to go and dine for new freshmen and
transfer student that come to Chico State and they walk into Sutter Dining.
It's a totally new experience for everybody and I think everybody just stops and takes a
look around says, "Wow!"
