Hey Man, Do Something
University of Michigan fraternity members were asked
What do men do when they struggle?
>>student 1: I don't think men are any different that women in this situation
I think they go to family or close friends. I think they're slower to open up,
at least that's been my experience with my fraternity brothers
or other men that I interact with on campus. I think for me, I typically talk with my housemates.
Sometimes they just let me yell at them, which is fine.
But I don't know if catharsis is the best solution. [laughs]
But generally, I will call a good friend. >>Student 2: When I am struggling, I try to
take a break. Find something that will relieve my stress,
whatever that might be or that I have fun doing,
and then come back to whatever it was that I was struggling with.
>>Student 3: I usually try to cope myself, but if that's too overwhelming,
I will seek the support of my friend and family. >>Student 4: I think most people's natural
reaction to struggling is to go more inward and really the solution
is more outward. >>Student 5: I think men a lot of times try
to push against that, they suppress their emotions or act the opposite
way than they feel because they feel that it's not very masculine
to show weakness or to be sad or upset. But that doesn't really
help at all, and I see that a lot of time that can be a
negative things. So what I try to do if I'm upset or pissed
off about [something], is just be true to my emotions, express those
emotions, and that way I can deal with the problems.
>>Student 6: I feel that a lot of men, (pause) because of what we're expected to do go into
denial whenever they're in trouble. I know for myself in the past, sometimes things get
hard and you're like "it's okay, it'll get better."
Sometimes, it's not enough to just go through it by yourself.
You need help. No one has to go through life alone.
