We are talking today about arm bars, how to apply them and how to apply them safely. There
are three main points to remember when applying an arm bar. If he were to step back and throw
a hook punch towards my head and I block, when I get ready to grab this arm to try to
apply an arm bar technique, I do not just grab here, I sort of grab underneath and rotate
his arm up so that it exposes his elbow, the bend of his elbow straight up. So if I slide
underneath for this technique, I can set a good wrist--a good arm bar, rather. If I have
not turned it, then his arm is just going to fold over, pretty much defeating the purpose
and putting me in a lot of danger. So again, very important whether it is from this technique
or any other technique to make sure that you have twisted his arm so that he is able to--that
you are able to expose his elbow and apply proper technique. Now as far as locking him,
you do not want to lock up here pass the elbow because it is pretty much ineffective. So
you slide down either on the elbow or an inch pass the elbow closest to his body and apply
the technique. Also keep in mind that you also not only just want to push straight up
and down with his arm but you also want to apply a little bit of twist, add some pain
to it. It also adds a lot more stress, and so that way you can make your technique very
effective just by twisting it a little bit more until he taps. And that was just a quick
explanation of how an arm bar will work. And the three main points are, again, make sure
that the elbow is exposed, the arm is able to be locked out; two, that you are applying
the pressure to the right place in the arm, right there by the elbow or an inch pass the
elbow; and also that in your technique, you are also giving some twist so it actually
puts more stress onto his arm.
