Hi. My name is Ken and I'm at a home in Leesburg, Virginia and the
homeowner here needs to get this roof repair done as quick as possible
before the next rain hits. And as you can see, we have a problem with blown-
off shingles. And what's caused this problem, is you have a ridge vent
directly above and all the shingles that were installed underneath the
ridge vent were all cut short so that will cause leakage only from driving
rains being blown underneath the ridge vent. And because of this, all
the nails that were holding the shingles down became rusted so that's why
all these shingles blew off.
I also noticed the problem that they have a ridge vent here that goes right
up against the wall of the chimney. And I was curious to know if by any
chance they made a mistake by cutting the wood underneath too close to the
wall of the chimney and they did. They cut off within 3 inches of the wall,
the chimney and that will cause leakage right in that area.
So what we need to do to correct this entire problem is remove all the
shingles in this entire area here all the way up to the peak of the roof,
remove the ridge vent along the peak of the roof, change the plywood at
this problem area here on both sides, install ice and water shield to the
wood surface, install new step flashing.
And once all that's done then the roof has to be nice and clean, then we
install new felt paper to the wood surface, re-shingle this entire problem
area, install a new ridge vent to the peak of the roof and once everything
is completed, we then apply a geocel tripolymer sealant to the underside of
every single shingle that put our hands on to make sure that these shingles
never blow off and that they're fully adhered within an hour's time.
Once everything is completed, the homeowners here in Leesburg will never
have to worry about another roof repair for many years to come.
