This is a combination of stitches
that will work well for an afghan or scarf.
This will be a small swatch for this demonstration.
The multiple is five.
It will take five chains to make each segment of
the pattern.
This is my hand-written instructions.
We will start off with a chain of twenty
and if you start with one
two
three
four
five
one
two
three
four
five
one
two
three
four
five
And then at the end we have four
Each one of these is going to be the multiple
The multiple is each segment of the pattern
that you would need to expand it
or make it larger
This means that you will add five additional chains
for each shell that you want to add on.
With the small swatch, I am working with twenty
So, if I wanted to add another shell, I would add
five more chains.
It may not always work out that you have an exact amount
you may have extra chains, or you may not have enough
There are ways to add on extra chains so that you do
not have to rip everything out.
Or you can take and sew in your chains at the end.
Not enough chains or too many is never a reason to
rip out.
I am using 4-ply yarn and a size I, 5.5 milimeter,
crochet hook.
I will start by attaching a slipknot to the crochet hook
Take the loose end, wrap it over the main strand.
Now there's a loop.
Take your loop, fold it over the main strand
Put your hook below the center strand
Back up the opposite side
This creates the slip knot
Now we will work a chain of twenty
One
Two
Three
Four
FIve
Six
Seven
Eight
Nine
Ten
Eleven
Twelve
Thirteen
Fourteen
Fifteen
Sixteen
Seventeen
Eighteen
Nineteen
If you're familiar with the foundation single crochet,
you can work the foundation single crochet instead
of the chain.
Now we will work one single crochet in each
chain across for a total of nineteen.
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Six
Seven
Eight
Nine
Ten
Continue across to the other side
there will be a total of nineteen single crochet.
I'm to the other side. I have completed row one.
Work a chain one, turn
Work one single crochet in each single crochet across
for a total of nineteen.
I have completed five so far
Six
Seven
Eight
Nine
Ten
Eleven
Twelve
Thirteen
Fourteen
Fifteen
Sixteen
Seventeen
Eighteen
Nineteen
That completes row two. Now you will turn.
I'm going to work a chain one
I'm not going to count that as a stitch
I want to work two full double crochet
There will be one double crochet
in each of the first two stitches.
And I'm working right through the single crochet
that I just completed to work the first double crochet.
Work the next double crochet.
For the first shell, we will skip one, two single crochet
In the next stitch, we will work five double crochet
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
This one is a little different. We will skip one, two
three, four single crochet.
In the fifth single crochet, work five double crochet.
That completes one
two
three
four
five.
Skip one, two, three, four single crochet
work five double crochet in the next stitch.
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Now skip two single crochet
We will work the last two double crochet.
That completes row three
Now I'm going to change color
I will be slip stitching the new color to the corner
And I'm putting my hook right down here
below these two loops. Through the first stitch.
Wrap the yarn over, pull it through
Now I'm going to work a chain one
Work one single crochet in each stitch across
there will be a total of nineteen.
And we are working right below these two loops at the
top of the stitch in each stitch.
I have completed seven and this is eight.
Nine
Ten
Eleven
Twelve
Thirteen
Fourteen
Fifteen
Sixteen
Seventeen
Eighteen
And I'm working the last single crochet for nineteen.
And this is what we have.
Now I'm going to work a chain one
and turn.
Work one single crochet in each stitch across for a
total of nineteen.
And at this point, you can decide how many rows of single
crochet you want to do between each shell row.
You can work as many rows of single crochet as you want
to work.
I am showing two rows in this example.
If you want to work five or ten rows, that's up to you.
It's going to work.
Continue across to the end for a total of nineteen
single crochet.
I'm going to work a chain and turn.
The chain will not count as a stitch.
I will be working the first two double crochet of the
next row.
And this is going to be the same as this row down here.
Now we skip two stitches.
And then work five double crochet in the next stitch
There's two
three
four
five.
We'll skip one, two, three, four.
In the fifth, which is right in the center of the
previous shell, we are working another set
of five double crochet which is a shell.
That completes one
two
three
four
five
Skip one, two, three, four stitches.
In the fifth stitch, work five double crochet.
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Skip two stitches. In the last two stitches, work one
double crochet in each stitch.
Now we are going to change color.
I am attatching the yarn right through the top
of the first stitch which is where we left off.
Working a chain one
Now work one single crochet in the same stitch
And one single crochet in each stitch across
for a total of nineteen.
Five
Six
Seven
Eight
Nine
Ten
Eleven
Twelve
Thirteen
Fourteen
Fifteen
Sixteen
Seventeen
Eighteen
Nineteen
Now chain. Work a single crochet in each stitch across
for a total of nineteen.
I have completed the last row.
I'm going to work a chain.
And turn or you can turn your chain
It doesn't make any difference.
I'm going to work one double crochet
in the same stitch. One double crochet in the next stitch.
Skip two single crochet, work five double crochet in
the next stitch.
That's one
Two
Three
Four
Five
Now you can see how they're all in the same stitch.
Down here, they're all in the same stitch.
All in the same stitch.
And they should aline up evenly with the center stitch
We will skip one, two, three four. In the next stitch,
work five double crochet.
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Skip one, two, three four single crochet.
In the next single crochet, work five double crochet.
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Skip two single crochet. Work one double crochet in
the next stitch. Work one double crochet in the next
stitch. Which is the last stitch.
What we are doing is repeating the two rows
of single crochet, and the row of shell.
You will continue for the length of your project.
And this is approximately six inches across.
