Letterheads are useful when sending out information about one's company or organization.
It usually consists of a logo and contact information as well as a background design.
We'll continue with the flower theme to create a letterhead in this lesson.
Since letterheads are for print, we'll create a new document by going to the File menu
then selecting 'New', then titling it 'Letterhead.'
In the New Document Profile list select 'Print'.
Then in the Size list, select 'Letter'.
Change Units to Inches, then, set the Top Bleed to '.125' as well as the bottom, left and right.
When finished click OK
To be precise, we're going to use the Ruler, so go to View menu, point to 'Rulers', then select 'Show Rulers'.
Next, we're going to create a horizontal guide at the top of the artboard by positioning the mouse
on the horizontal ruler, then, dragging it down until you reach the 1 inch mark on the vertical ruler.
Repeat the same thing except this time, drag the guide all the way to the 10 inch mark on the vertical ruler.
Next, we're going to create a vertical guide on the left side of the artboard
so, let's position the mouse pointer on the vertical ruler
and drag it to the right until your guide reaches the 1 inch mark on the horizontal ruler.
Repeat and position the guide 1 inch from the right end of the document.
Now to add our graphics and text, let's open data file 'Logo.ai'.
Go to the File menu, select 'Open', then, locate and select 'Logo.ai'.
With the Selection tool selected, click and select the logo on this artboard,
then, go to the Edit menu and select 'Copy'.
Next we're going to return to our letterhead document.
Go back to the Edit menu and select 'Paste'.
Hold down the [Shift] key and drag the corner handle to decrease the size of the logo.
Click and drag the newly sized logo to the top of the letterhead.
In the Control panel, click on Align, click the Horizontal Align Center button.
Let's use the Zoom tool to magnify the top of the letterhead.
To add text, select the Type tool, click on the artboard,
and type a pretend address, or in our case we're going to type 'Library Palmer Wing Room 4056'.
Select the Selection tool, double-click on the Fill box,
then, change the color of the text to R '96', G '58', and B '23'. Click OK.
Let's add some more text.
Select the Type tool, then, on the artboard, type 'itstraining@calstatela.edu'.
Use the selection tool to select the new text, then, select the Eyedropper tool.
Click on the the previous text in order to sample its format.
Click on the Type tool again and type phone number '(323) 343-5369'.
Click on the Selection tool to select the text, then, click on our Eyedropper tool again
and click on any of our previous text to sample its format.
Go back to the Type tool and type 'www.calstatela.edu/training' or any website that you would like.
Select the Selection tool, then the Eyedropper tool, then click to sample.
Now let's use the Selection tool to reposition our text.
First select the website and drag it up near the logo.
Let's move the other text up towards the logo as well.
The Smart Guides automatically appear to help you align the text with each other.
Don't forget to drag the phone number up as well.
Now let's hold down the [Spacebar] and move to the bottom of the letterhead.
Hold down and drag the mouse until you get to the bottom of the letterhead.
Now select the Rectangle tool and draw a long rectangle at the bottom of the letterhead.
Double click on the Fill box, and change R to '37', G to '170', and B to '225.' Click OK.
Let's use the Zoom tool to zoom back out.
Make sure that you are holding on to the [Alt] key on your keyboard
in order to make sure that you're not zooming back in.
Now that we've created our design for our letterhead in Illustrator
we want to export it to Microsoft Word where we can use it as an actual letter.
To do this, go to the File menu, click 'Export'.
Then, in the Export dialog box, select Desktop as the location to save the file
and for Save as type, select 'PNG', then, Save.
In the PNG Options dialog box, under Resolution, select Other
and in the ppi box, type '96'. Afterwards, click OK.
Now open Microsoft Office Word, then, on the Page Layout tab, in the Page Background group,
click the watermark button and select 'Custom Watermark'.
When the Printed Watermark dialog box open, select the icture watermark option
and then, click the Select Picture button.
The file 'Letterhead.png' should be on the desktop.
When the Insert Picture dialog box opens, locate and select our saved Illustrator letterhead file.
Once you've located and selected it, click Insert.
In the Scale list select '100%' and deselect the Washout check box.
Afterwards, click OK.
Let' zoom out in Microsoft Word to have a better look at our new letterhead.
