CMI5 is a joint effort to revolutionize the reporting possibilities of Learning Management
Systems. The specification defines a web service interface to report run-time learning data
from traditional web content and non-web-based systems. With a lightweight but extensible
data model, CMI5 is easily customizable and allows for the LMS to capture virutally any
source format, including PDFs, audio and video files, as well as game console, and simulation
performance data. ADL's CMI-5 Wrapper provides a simple means of encapsulating your SCORM 1.2
content with CMI-5 compatibility, while making no changes to the included SCOs. This
wrapper was designed to be used in conjunction with ADL's Learning Record Store, but with
minimal modifications, can be updated to work with another LMS as well as SCORM 2004 conformant
SCOs. For written instructions on implementing the CMI-5 Wrapper,
please see the README documentation included in the package.
To utilize the CMI-5 Wrapper, you will need to include the SCORM_CMI5_Wrapper.html file
as well as the additional supporting files, into your SCORM conformant package.
Open the manifest document included in your package, entitled imsmanifest.xml.
Start by scrolling to the opening 'resources' tag and changing the hypertext references for each
SCO to SCORM_CMI5_Wrapper.html
Be sure to change the reference in each location used.
Next, for each item element within the 'organizations' tag, add the 'paramaters' attribute, with
a URL to the corresponding SCO.
The Wrapper will aslo expect to find three additional
URL parameters: Endpoint, Format, and ID. If these will not be provided by your LMS
implementation, include them on the end of the URL following an ampersand character code.
We can now exercise the CMI-5 data model capabilities of this course through the
Learning Record Store Prototype. The wrapper will provide the API that is sought by the SCOs. Next,
it translates the data from SCORM to a JSON implemementation of the CMI5 data model. The
reformatted data can now be received by the web services endpoint.
After the course is completed,
click on the link to return to the LRS. The score for that attempt will now be visible
This concludes the video for the CMI5 Wrapper Demonstration.
