the associated press is decided that married same-sex couples art the same as
married
opposite sex couples is a really interesting article written by are with
a good friend of the show john becker who did the investigation into marcus
bachmann ds anti-gay therapy clinic
and he writes about a memo that was sent out internally by the associated press
two writers editors etcetera
about how married same-sex couples should be written about and the memo
seems to have
a different set of rules for gay and lesbian couples that's different
from straight couples here's the policy initially was sent out saying same-sex
couples
we were asked how to report about same-sex couples who call themselves
husband and wife our view is that such terms may be used in a p stories
with attribution generally a_p_ uses couple or partner to describe people in
civil unions of same-sex marriages
basically what they're saying is
if you are a heterosexual couple
regardless of how the couple refers to the other person saying this is my
partner or my way for whatever you default to saying
the husband or the wife
for uh... again you're lesbian couple
you would only you would default to say partner or or whatever other term you
use
except
if bill couple specifically said it my husband or my wife and that case you
have to attribute it you have to see you you can use that but you have to say as
they referred to each other
husband or as they refer to each other wife so this seems like a blatant double
standard to me now
after there were some complained about this
uh... the uh... d the spokesman for the associated press poll quarrel call first
clendenin email that the reissued re-wrote an reissued the memo
and the problem is the new one isn't really that much better it says we were
asked how to report about same-sex couple who calls himself who call
themselves husband and wife
our view is that such terms may be used in eighty content if those involved have
regularly use those terms generally eight pieces couple or partner to
describe people in civil unions are same sex marriages so the rewriting isn't
really any better the point here is
these what the point is that same sex couples have to opt in
to use husband or wife to have husband or wife used in articles
opposite sex couples get that by default so does makes no sense to me can you
think of any reason why this make sense
uh... i can only think of wine and i'm just plain don't doubt the here i don't
think this is how we should be done but
amina is when i first glance over this i assumed that this was done because they
didn't want readers to get confused about things like if you have an article
about pat uh... pat uh... smith
and it says pat smith's
or perhaps that's why
i mean it
it really people made incorrectly assume if you have androgynous names that there
might be lack of clarity about the gender of right before you read it mike
powell while i thought this was the person's wife are thought this is a
person's house and i thought this was the one in the man you know people
getting confused that i mean that's the only reason i can't think of that this
would happen but
i mean if
if someone is your husband or your wife there has been here on the end of time
what do you think
yeah i mean the only other explanation i guess is that
they recognize that this is controversial nationally right now and
that they just don't want to deal with them
rallies they don't want to take aside and if they
if they take the liberal position they would be seen as taking a side and
they're the a_p_ so they want to just play it play pool for now
yahoo nobody's at that place where the basically creating a separate but equal
type situation where they didn't really seem to be any explanation offered who
helped with that
the rewriting was almost identical to the initial one 'cause the controversy
right yeah
way to clear that up associated press thank you
