Welcome and thank you for joining me. I'm Steve Brooks, a
personal injury wrongful death social security disability
attorney practicing here in the state of Florida. Today's video
tip is about the question of how do I know if I have an SSDI
claim or an SSI claim? SSDI stands for Social Security
Disability Insurance and has the word insurance in it, which
means you're paying for something. SSI is Supplemental
Security Income, which is more akin to a welfare type program
that you haven't paid for so it's going to have strings
attached to it. How do you know if you qualify for SSDI? Here's
how you know. If you've worked over a 3 month period and had
money deducted out of your paycheck to be paid for social
security, you're going to qualify for one quarter of
credit. You have to have 20 quarters of credit over the last
40 quarters. To put it simply, you've had to have worked and
had money deducted from a paycheck and paid into social
security in 5 of the last 10 years to be eligible for SSDI.
SSI is designed for folks that don't qualify for SSDI so we
always look first to see if you qualify for SSDI. If you don't
qualify for SSDI, then we look at SSI to see if you meet the
income and asset limitations that that program puts on you.
The SSDI and the SSI programs can be complicated. We have a
social security section in the Brooks Law Group that deals with
nothing but social security disability claims. Why am I
telling you all this? I'm telling you this because if you
have questions about your claim, we deal with that every day and
we're here to answer those questions. I urge you to pick up
the phone and call us at 1-888-936-3264, that's
1-888-WE-MEAN-IT. Thank you so much for joining us today.
I'm Steve Brooks.
