Hello everybody, I'm Huell Howser here to tell you about a free program from
Southern California Edison,
a program designed to help small business owners cut down on their electric bills.
That ought to get everybody's attention.
It's called Direct Install and here to tell us about it is Jeanetta Harris who's, well,
you're in charge of the outreach for this program. Tell us what this program is all about.
Direct Install, as you already said Huell,
is a free program for small business customers, it's been around five years.
You call Edison and we'll have one of our three contractors come out to visit you.
They'll do an assessment, they'll come back for the installation, and that's about it,
it's that simple.
The good part of all this, I've already said it once but it bears repeating, It's FREE!
It is free and Southern California Edison just wants to be able to not only
help Wanda's business, but help other small businesses,
especially in today's tough economic times.
Okay, let's go inside. Ice cream sounds good to me. But before we go inside
I talked with all three contractors connected with this program
to find out what they thought about it.
What would you say to these business owners to get them excited about it
and involved with it?
Well any business owner that's trying to control their expenses,
to make them more profitable, needs to incorporate energy efficiency.
It just makes good sense.
What would you tell a small business owner who doesn't know about this program
who wants to get involved with it? Does it really make a difference to them?
It does. The new equipment is thirty five to forty two percent more efficient.
It's brighter lights, the difference is amazing with the new light.
Do you think that most people know
that their businesses could be made more efficient?
I don't think most people realize it until we actually come in and explain to them
what all we can do for them to make them more efficient.
Here is the lady right here, Patricia Watts, whose company actually came in to this
ice cream parlor and made the difference. You use good products, too, don't you?
We use the highest quality products backed by a one year warranty,
and customer service is very important to us.
You got to use good products or you know who will be after you.
And there she is Wanda Johnson-Pope you own this ice cream parlor?
I do.
Now, can you remember, did you have any ideas about what was probably
going to be done when the people showed up here?
No, they told me what they were going to do and
I'm very appreciative of what they've done.
So they came in and said you need new lights.
Do you think that new lights have actually made a difference?
Oh yes.
So now it's bright and airy and everything is right with the world,
including, you've got some motion sensors.
I do.
What's that all about?
When you walk into the restroom or to the mop room, the light comes on on its own,
stays on one minute after you come out of the room and it turns itself off,
so it's saving money.
You probably never thought of that, did you?
I never did.
Now do you think all of this is going to make a real difference in your electricity bill?
Oh yes, I'm sure it will.
Why?
Because if you've got energy saving lights it's going to always be better.
So this is all a good thing?
Very good.

To everybody, yes, I have done it.
