The top 10 moving tips.
Summer is the peak season of moving. Many choose to spend their holiday packing up,
cleaning and moving homes before the kids start school again in the autumn. Here are
10 top moving tips to avoid stress when you are moving houses:
1. Begin early As soon as you know that you are moving, you
should start planning. There is no reason to hesitate. Start making lists of what you
need to do and give each item on the list a clear deadline.
2. Be organised The key to a stress free move is to be organised.
This is the time to get those spread sheets or lists out. Write on the boxes what is in
them and where they are going. This will help the moving companies work faster which can
save you money. 3. Ask for help
Many think that they can move themselves and forget how much they actually own and will
need to bring with them. Ask friends and family for help both with the packing of boxes and
moving them. You can also contact moving companies and ask how much they will charge for moving
your stuff once packed. 4. Mark boxes clearly
It is important that you mark boxes clearly with what is in them and what room they are
being placed in. This allows the moving company to get on with the task at hand without you
micromanaging. 5. Move large items first
This is so that you are not exhausted from the rest of the move when you get to these
items, as well as it being easier to place your other belongings in the moving truck
once the larger items are in there. This will help you take full advantage of the space
you have available to you. 6. Have a clear out
As you go from room to room, packing up your belongings, make sure that you filter out
those clothes you never wear, those books that you will never read again, and that you
shred all those pieces of paper that you really have no use for anymore. This can significantly
reduce the amount of things you have to move. Many moving companies charge per trip they
have to take with the removal van, and by getting rid of the things that you no longer
need you can save a lot of money. 7. Do not have pets around
If you have pets it is a good idea to ask someone else to watch them or place them in
a kennel. Your moving company will thank you, as their worst nightmare is carrying heavy
boxes with an eager dog or sneaky cat running around.
8. Utilise the space Removal companies are experts at packing moving
vans and will know how to best utilise the space that is available to you. If you are
packing the moving van yourself think about how you can put smaller items in between the
larger ones and save space by putting socks in shoes or books in drawers of furniture
that has already been put into the moving van. By making sure you fill every bit of
open space you might be able to bring more than you first thought.
9. Have a moving day box If you have followed all the previous tips
most of your belongings should be packed up well in advance of your actual moving day.
But there are things that you will need in the last couple of days leading up to your
move. This includes toothbrush, some food, a pair of scissors perhaps, a felt tip pen
to mark boxes with and the keys to your old and new home. All this should be kept in a
box that is easy to grab once you are ready to go, but marked so that the moving company
does not touch it. 10. Enjoy your moving day
Your moving day can be an emotional affair as you are leaving your home to start a new
life or live a new place. But make sure that you enjoy the day as much as possible and
get mentally prepared to start your new adventure.
