Hi I'm Karis, I'm a Dietics student from Curtin University. I'm here in Ukraine as part of
the Go Global project working in a child orphanage.
From a dietics perspective, probably the biggest difficulty working in Ukraine is the language
and cultural barriers, um, the food is totally different to what we get back home, trying
to analyse it from that perspective has been really difficult and also just being the first
dietics group to come has been a big challenge trying to explain our role and what we want
to achieve here.
We just wanted to analyse the nutritional status of all the children. So we wanted to,
um, basically get a diet history, see what they're eating day-to-day and see whether
it's meeting all their nutritional requirements.
We actually started trialling some finger foods on some of the children that are more
capable of feeding themselves and that's actually been carried out and implemented by the carers
now as well which is really good.
It feels amazing to, um, be a part of it first of all, but then to see the changes and to
think they're going to be carried out is just, it's unbelievable, we weren't expecting it
at all, so it's a really, really good feeling.
