I'm here with Doug Bryce, he's Co-Chair of Osler's mining group, here at the PDAC conference.
Doug, tell me why is PDAC such a big and such an important conference?
Well, the mining industry revolves around conferences in some ways, for better or for
worse. It's an international industry so
the projects are based all over the world,
the companies are based all over the world, although they're sort of concentrated in
certain jurisdictions, and
so PDAC is one of a sequence of international conferences. It's the
single biggest of those conferences because Canada has traditionally punched
well above its weight in the mining sector. - And why that? Why has
Canada, and in particular Toronto, become such an important
centre for mining finance?
Part of it is just the first mover advantage. So Canada
pretty early on developed, a
community really, of dealmakers and investors
that were focused on the mining sector very heavily and probably
more heavily than was the case in most of the other main capital markets around
the world. And so
you know, others are in the game as well, it's far from being a
monopoly, but Toronto got out there early and has maintained the
advantage so far.
And why is it important for people to come to this conference? What is the value
they get out of it? Why is there
such a buzz and why is there such high attendance?
You know, well again, I mean think of these companies
that operate all around the world, there's limited opportunity to see
your peers and so
this becomes a way to justify to your boss,
an opportunity to go and see, you know, you may have a project in Indonesia and
you know
you've got colleagues and peers that are operating in Gayana and South America.
You meet in Toronto to talk about it and it's a place where projects
can meet up with investors and deals can get get made. But more
fundamentally, it's a way that a very international community can all get together
in one spot.
Doug, thank you very much. - Great, thanks a lot.
