AIA North Carolina is proud to present the William H. Deitrick Service Medal to James E. Rains, Jr., AIA.
The Deitrick Service Medal is presented to an AIA North Carolina member who exhibits extraordinary service to the community, profession or AIA North Carolina, and was named in honor of the late William Henley Deitrick, FAIA, a former president of AIA North Carolina.
James Rains Jr., Jim, is known to some as a steward for Construction Administration.
He has a passion for seeing that buildings are constructed with care and that relationships are built between the architect, owner, engineer, contractor and construction team.
Jim played an integral role in creating and developing the newest National Knowledge Community which provides a forum for discussion and learning around the construction phase of a project.
He has served on the local, state and national level with the AIA in many positions ranging from section member to section and state president and is currently a South Atlantic Regional Director.
He has participated in the NC Code Qualifications Board Task Force on Disaster Response, was appointed by governor Martin to the Board of Directors of the NC Alternative Energy Corporation,
and has also served with the NC Solar Energy Association.
He currently serves on committees in his community, including the American Arbitration Association, the Fiscal Operations Planning Committee, and the Planning Board for Randolph County.
Mary A. Trotter, an Assistant Superintendent at Randolph County Schools says: “I consider Mr. Rains a valued colleague and have found him to be dedicated, sincere, and compassionate in all areas of his professional and personal life. His compassion for our students and genuine passion for his work are evident in all areas of decision making.”
Paul David Boney, FAIA from LS3P says: “As AIANC President, Jim led this organization and promoted advocacy on behalf of his fellow architects in the legislature and the countless meetings that he attended. Jim is a tireless advocate for architects of all walks of life.”
“Jim’s broader impact on the field of construction administration encompasses his focused practice, mentoring both young and experienced architects, and his educational seminars and lectures, which have earned him great respect as both practitioner and advisor.” says Cheryl C. Walker, FAIA of Gannt Huberman Architects.
