Hello and welcome!
Today we are going to learn alternative methods of holding your arms...
...whilst you pace. So first of all what is pacing?
Well pacing is when you...
...walk around aimlessly whilst you think.
Now you can do it in a straight line or you can swivel;
you can move to the center; you can...
...move round in a circle either clockwise...
...or anticlockwise. Notice how I've...
...put on my tapping shoes so you can hear...
...me pace on the floor as I walk and think.
Now when you do this...
...usually you hold your arms at the side...
...they just hang and swivel...
...with you. Now another...
...way of doing this is to hold them around your belt.
Clasp them and they just about touch the belt there...
...as you pace.
This is one way of doing it and its a very common way. Now I'm going to show you some alternatives.
The first one which seems pretty obvious to me is to....
...cross your arms like this. Now this is...
...a relatively comfortable position. But...
...there are other methods that might suite you better. For instance, you can take the left hand...
...and take your right elbow and shove them together...
...and then you can use your hand to help...
...you think. I can rock...
...or it can stretch around (a bit of clicking there)...
...and you can also...
...stroke your chin like this or scratch your nose.
That tends to help with thinking quite a lot...
...in my experience anyway. But...
...this is another method. Another method is to hold your hands together...
...as if in prayer or let them rock gently...
...or again use the chin and just knock it...
...against the chin like this.
That helps a lot. When you...
...are bored of that or have decided that its maybe...
...not working for you as well, you can clasp them together like...
...this and slowly rock them a little bit.
Now if you're...
...wanting a variation of this, maybe pulling it out and...
...stretching it behind your head like so.
Now this is a useful method because...
...you can stretch your back muscles...
...your torso a little bit. Stretch the...
...muscles in your arm and this...
...can help because it draws oxygen around the body and hopefully to your brain as well so it receives...
...a bit more oxygen and therefore you can think a bit harder. Now you can...
...pull that up to the top of your head.
Maybe mess up the hair a little bit. Now...
...if that's...your...
...finished with that I guess. Then you can...
...stretch it out there. Now this is a hold, whilst your pacing, that you...
...can't hold for a long time because...
...its one that requires a lot of muscles all the way down the arm...
...all the way down the side of the body. So...
...its good to get the oxygen flowing but once you've finished with that...
...then stretching the arms a bit like this.
You can get a bit of energy...
...flowing.
You can do a sort of windmill thing where one arm...
...goes backwards and one arm goes forwards. Now the problem with this techniques...
...its a very extreme way of pacing but...
...in fact it might not be for you because you might end up thinking too much...
...about the arms and not about the actual thinking. So...
...that's a dangerous method to use. But...
...once you've finished that, then you can...
...come back to a relaxed position having...
...oxygen flowing through your brain and thoughts hopefully...
...flowing and pulsing by now. And...
...those are the methods that I wanted to show you. Although...
...I will now tell you my favourite method. Now this is a bit...
...unorthodox but this is a technique that I prefer...
...when I pace: I just let...
...the left arm swing and with the right hand...
...I like to bite my nails. Now if you're a...
...'nail biter' then you might find that...
...you run out of nails. So what do you do?
Well you can use the other hand! But once you've run out of those nails...
...then how do you continue to bite your nails...
...whilst you pace? Well there are two alternatives:
The first one that I'm going to mention is the one that I...
...use. So I like to bite the tops of the skins...
...of the fingers.
Now that works successfully for me.
I can touch the tips of those fingers.
But others have found...
...that biting just underneath the cuticle...
...to be a more effective method...
...of pacing and biting nails.
It's a very useful thing to help you think whilst you pace.
And so, as we've discovered...
...in fact, hands can help you to think...
...whilst you pace. So I hope we've...
...learnt a lot here and well...
...there are alternative methods for...
...holding your arms whilst you pace. Thank you very much.
