I'm LaDonna Jenkins, and I am a graduate student at
Eastern Illinois University.
And today I am here to talk to you about the
importance of children drinking juices.
Children aged 1 through 4 should consume two servings
of juice a day, and children 4 and up should consume
four servings of juice a day.
Fruit juice can be considered orange, apple, or grapefruit.
There are many health benefits of consuming
juices in your diet.
There's a prevention of not having a stroke, cardiovascular
disease, Type 2 diabetes, and protection against
different kinds of cancers.
Not only do they protect against different diseases,
but they offer lots of fiber and potassium in them.
Fruit juice is also low in fat, calories, and sodium,
and it contains no cholesterol.
One of the most important things about fruit juices
is reading the labels.
For a product to be considered a real fruit juice,
it must be labeled 100% fruit juice on it.
All three of these juices right here all contain
100% fruit juice.
Many products are labeled 10% to 99% fruit juice, and they are
labeled fruit beverage, fruit cocktail, or fruit punch.
This product right here contains 10% fruit juice, and it is by
Welch's, and it is labeled a fruit punch.
A lot of these products contain added sugars
or different flavors.
It is required by law that every fruit juice have the
percentage of fruit juice labeled on the product.
Infants 0 to 6 months should not consume fruit juice and
should only drink breast milk and infant formula.
If they do consume fruit juice before they are 6 months,
they could have a risk of malnutrition and
develop stomach problems.
Once your child has reached 6 months you can start introducing
fruit juice, but only through a cup and never a bottle.
Children should not be put to bed with a bottle because the
risk of tooth decay is greater.
The sugars in the juices can sit on the teeth and cause decay.
Why is it easy for toddlers to drink too much fruit juice?
Toddlers often like fruit juice and they'll drink a lot of it.
Parents often think fruit juice is very nutritious and
they do not limit their children's consumption of it.
Also, fruit juice is very inexpensive and is conveniently
packaged, so it's easy to put in their lunch pail or
take with them in the car.
Why should your child drink fruit juice?
Most fruit juices contain vitamin C, vitamin A,
and carbohydrates.
Vitamin C provides lots of benefits such as healing cuts
and fighting off infections, which is important when you
have young children.
Vitamin A helps with healthy eyes and skin.
And carbohydrates are important for energy for children.
Is too much fruit juice a risk?
Sometimes, too much of a good thing can turn into a bad thing.
Often, children over-consume juice and this can lead to
health problems such as obesity, tooth decay,
and stomach disorders.
Some of the perks of drinking juices is often children do not
like eating fruits, so if they consume fruit juice they'll get
their recommended dietary intake from the food guide pyramid.
If your child is healthy and they consume fruits, vegetables,
dairy products, milk, and lean protein they will continue to be
healthy, but it is important to remember to consider eating
whole fruits also.
I hope you enjoyed my presentation on fruit juices,
and thank you for watching.
