As we continue our series on Sun Oven Essentials, we're going to talk about
why your food doesn't burn in a Sun Oven and how even the cooking is inside
of it. When we cook in the Sun Oven, the entire chamber is the same
temperature. There are no hotspots or cold spots. The top of the oven, the
bottom of the oven, the sides are all exactly the same temperature.
So, when we have food inside a pot inside the Sun Oven, nothing burns. When
the food is inside the pot, the pot, the food inside the pot, and the air
around the pot are all exactly the same temperature. So with that even
heat, you only need to mix food once and put it in the Sun Oven. You don't
have to stir it. You don't have to tend to it.
Because there's no movement of air inside the chamber, besides for it not
drying, when you make a roast it is just so moist and so succulent. Or when
you make things like baking bread, they're just light and fluffy. Or even
things as simple as heating a pot of rice, it's amazing but when you cook
in the Sun Oven with that nondrying, non-burning, it just enhances the
taste of whatever you cook.
The complex carbohydrates break down very slowly when you cook in the Sun
Oven, which enhances the taste, but also allows it to be very forgiving.
With the even nondrying heat in the Sun Oven, there are no hotspots, which
makes the entire chamber usable. You can take the leveling tray out of the
Sun Oven, and as long as you put something like one of these - this is one
of the baking or dehydrating racks - [inaudible 00:01:51] in the bottom of
the oven.
You never want to put a pot or a pan directly on the floor of the oven. But
if you raise the food up just a little bit so air flows around it, then
you'll wind up having no hotspots and completely even heat. It's very
forgiving to cook in the Sun Oven. You can leave things in an extra hour.
You can leave the things in an extra two hours or several hours longer, and
it's not going to dry out and it's not going to burn. So it really is
forgiving.
With the even temperature inside of it, you can use larger pots. You can
cook up to an 18-pound turkey in a baking bag or make roasts of just about
any size. But even if you had a pot with food inside of it, you could put
potatoes or you can put corn on the cob all the way around, and just stuff
the entire oven full of food and it will heat and it will cook.
So it allows you to do just about anything you want to do and not worry
about it drying out or burning.
