There are summer camps that entertain
for the week and there are camps
that can change lives.
The STEPS camp held
at Grand Valley State University is one
of the latter.
The Science, Technology
and Engineering Preview camp exposes middle
school girls to the careers of engineering...
a field where women make up just 10%
of the work force.
About 80 campers were able to design,
manufacture and fly radio-controlled
electronic airplanes.
The girls watched their hard work take flight
and perhaps their careers find wings.
The STEPS camp has taken place
at Grand Valley for more than a decade.
Supporters include Grand Valley and sponsors
like Alcoa and NASA.
These organizations need bright
and innovative engineers,
and they want to make sure girls get an
invitation to fly.
