Hi I'm doctor Shazia Malik, I'm a podiatrist practicing in Montreal, I've been here for
fifteen years.
Orthotics may seem embarrassing to talk about and to use, but after feeling the relief that
comes with a well designed orthotic, most users forget all about their hesitations.
An orthotic is a custom-shaped medical device that is worn in the shoe in order to correct
a wide variety of problems. Orthotics can relieve pain, fix deformities, and generally
improve the biomechanics of the foot and other parts of the body.
As we said, orthotics can be used to address many different issues. These include flat
feet, high arches, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, knee and back pain, ankle weakness, bunions,
hammertoes, postural problems, arthritis, and more.
Orthotics are especially important for addressing the problems of children. By managing an issue
early in life, major problems can be prevented. If a child falls often, wears out a shoe in
the same place, tires quickly when walking, experiences knee pain, or walks on his or
her toes, it is recommended that the child undergo a comprehensive evaluation, as orthotics
may be necessary.
An orthotic assessment includes a complete and thorough biomechanical and postural assessment,
and may include X-rays, a foot scan, a gait exam, and follow up visits. Orthotics fit
into regular shoes comfortably, and it is not necessary to buy custom shoes.
