NARRATOR>> So - you have heard about the Supplemental Instruction Program from a professor, an SI
Leader in your classroom, an advisor or through the academic support center and have decided
that being an SI Leader is right for you.
Before you take the leap to become an SI Leader let’s learn more about what the position
involves.
An SI Leader must always be a model student in and out of the classroom. SI Leaders must
have earned a B or better in the course they are supporting and are generally doing well
in other courses.
SI Leaders can expect to spend about 8-12 hours a week working on SI related projects.
This can include attending class, planning for and holding two sessions outside of class
each week and a weekly staff meeting.
During SI sessions SI Leaders are expected to help engage students in discussion about
the topics covered in class and introduce new study skills to students that they can
incorporate into their daily study routines. It’s a bit different from TA or Tutoring
models as it is more student led.
All sessions are documented with a sign in sheet of all the students and a planning sheet
of what the hour long SI session will entail.
Each week SI Leaders are expected to attend a staff meeting. This is where SI Leaders
can get together with other SI Leaders who are supporting different course sections and
discuss how their weeks have gone (and also hand in that paperwork!).
You are never alone in your position as an SI Leader you are also able to ask for help
of your fellow colleagues, program coordinator or faculty partner.
Being an SI Leader is an extremely rewarding job. There is nothing like watching an “ah-ah!”
moment with a student, and as an SI Leader you get to be part of it.
If you feel that SI is for you please submit your application today and we will be in touch
as soon as we have any vacancies that match your skills!!
