The City of Brandon has a mosquito abatement program to control the outbreak of adult mosquitoes
in the community. We do controlled treatment of standing water throughout the community.
We have about 40 sites presently and the number of sites can vary depending on the rain and
the amount of water we have laying around the city.
The City of Brandon Abatement crew go out and they check standing pools of water throughout
the City of Brandon. What they do is they dip into the water with a little dipping container
to determine how many larvae are in that water. When we get the dip, we will look to see how
many. And we are looking to see an average of 5 or more larvae that are collected per
dip in ten or more dips. If we have an area that has many larvae in it we would treat
the area and then we would go back to monitor it several days after to make sure there are
no more larvae developing in that pool of water.
The product that we use to treat the standing water is called VectoBac. It's a product that
is toxic to the mosquito but it is not harmful to the mammals or the fish or the animal
life in the water, so it is very safe to use to treat the adult the mosquito in the larvae
stage.
