I'm very excited to discuss Will Allen's book the "Good Food Revolution"
with Hofstra's incoming class of 2017. The "Good Food Revolution" was a really
inspiring story
because it contains such a moving story
of personal and social healing and I
really look forward to discussing the book with Hofstra's incoming class of
2017 because I study climate change
and one of the things that was a strong theme and a strong focus on Will
Allen's work
was trying to reduce the energy use associated with the growth
of food. He incorporated several really inspiring and innovative techniques into
his
into his farming. Hoop houses which
reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases from the burning of
fossil fuels by reducing the energy use associated with growing food,
he used worms to return nutrients to depleted city soils
he evolved this very complicated and yet
extremely simple system of using the waist
from growing fish to grow vegetables
and all of these techniques and
approaches that he essentially
invented with the help for other people 'close the loop' as he put it,
which is very important because we have so many
emissions of fossil fuels,
burning fossil fuels that put greenhouse gases into the atmosphere
and we have so many one-way processes that remove the nutrients from the soil
and degrade our systems
the earth systems and so a lot of the the things that Will Allen is doing in
this work really,
by 'closing the loop' as he puts it bring that system into a
a balance that we that we lack right now. "The Good Food Revolution" really gives me
hope
because it contains such an exciting vision of
local intensive and sustainable agriculture
and if we can reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere
while at the same time providing jobs and growing healthier food for people
what a great outcome for us all. So Will Allen's actions make me wonder how can
we take his skepticism of unnecessary technology
and his common sense solutions and apply them more broadly to our own lives.
Perhaps we can incorporate composting
more broadly into our society, perhaps we can incorporate the technology
of biogas digesters, which is something that he has advanced through his work,
we can incorporate that more broadly and reduce our fossil fuel burning in our
emmissions of greenhouse gases.
This book contains so many compelling stories of people struggling with
difficult circumstances and yet
making the world a better place, that it really gives me hope.
