Hi I’m Carlie from Close to my Heart
and Burlap is really hot right now in scrapbooking and paper crafting,
so today I would like to show you how you can add a touch of flair
to our My Creations burlap drawstring bags
to make the perfect presentation for a small gift,
a party favor, or a place card at a casual dinner.
As you can see on this little bag right here I have just dressed it up using liquid glass
to adhere metal and paper embellishments to the front of the bag.
Now you’ll want to make sure when you’re using liquid glass
or any liquid glue to adhere anything to the front of your burlap bags
that you slide a piece of cardstock inside
so you don’t end up accidentally gluing your bag shut.
Now on this other example
there is a fun little ribbon cluster on here
and I’m actually going to show you how you can sew embellishments right on to the bag.
So let’s take a look,
I’ve got my needle threaded with some thread already
and I’m just going to tie a little knot on the end
and then I have a piece of our chevron ribbon
and what you can do;you don’t have to worry about starting from the inside of the bag
because there are these fine woven textures, all you have to do
is hook one of those threads on your burlap bag
and then if you’re worried about your knot showing don’t worry
because once you have put your first stitch through
when you slide your needle through if you leave a little bit of a ribbon tab
that will cover the knot, then you can just trim of anything that is sticking out.
Then once you have your first puncture
I’m just going to slide my fingers in and leave my thumb out so I have a little control
on where my ribbon is laying, and then just pierce your needle through
as thick as you want your stitch to be
and then I’m going to slide it through
and then just pull it right out through my bag here.
So there’s one stitch,
and then I’m going to send the needle back through again
and it might take a little bit of time to work the bag
and get your needle where you need it to be
but once you get it in there you can just pull it right back out again
so it’s just a simple stitching technique right on the front of your bag,
and I’m not going to go all the way across but you can see here
on my finished example that I have stitched all the way across
and then I’ve even added a couple of little ruffles and an embellishment cluster
that I have used liquid glass to adhere as well,
and don’t forget to slide that cardstock in there so that you don’t glue your bag shut.
Now let’s look at a couple of other examples here ,
you can see that I have used this burlap bag
and I’ve just used our alcohol markers
with a strip of cardstock as my guide
and then I just colored the front of the bag.
Again you will want to have a piece of cardstock in there
because it’s such a a natural woven fiber
the ink will just soak right through,
so if you have a piece of cardstock in there it won’t colorize the back of your bag.
Now to get your line this saturated you will want to move slowly with your marker
and then maybe go over it a couple of times until you have achieved the color intensity that you would like,
and you’ll also want to note because it is natural woven fiber
some of that burlap will end up showing through after it has dried completely
but that just gives it a fun little organic look;
and you can also see that I have added more stitching and some embellishments here using my liquid glass
it just it adheres to the bag so well so we recommend liquid glass.
On my last bag you can see
that I’ve used it as a place setting for a themed family meal,
and all I have done is just tied a Cricut name tag around the top of the bag with hemp
and then I put my utensils in here but you could easily fill it with treats and put it next to the plate
so your guest knows where they’re supposed to sit.
Dress up your burlap bags easily with markers, embellishments, or ribbon
to reflect your personality, the receivers taste, or a specific theme
it’s simple yet makes a colorful statement.
