\ Pepsi is making some changes to one of its
house recipes: Gatorade.\ \
The company, PepsiCo Inc., plans to remove a controversial ingredient {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK
"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQnQWdrXNMk"}}{\fldrslt \cf3 \ul \ulc3 in the product}} that sparked
numerous customer complaints after an online petition was created in November.\
\ 15-year-old Sarah Kavanagh posted a {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK
"http://www.change.org/petitions/gatorade-don-t-put-flame-retardant-chemicals-in-sports-drinks"}}{\fldrslt \cf3 \ul \ulc3 petition on Change.org}} highlighting
brominated vegetable oil\'97 an ingredient linked to flame-retardants as well as reproductive
and behavioral disorders. The petition gained nearly 200,000 signatures by the end of the
first month.\ \
PepsiCo has reportedly been using the ingredient only temporarily since February 2012.\
\ A {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "http://life.nationalpost.com/2013/01/25/pepsi-to-remove-brominated-vegetable-oil-from-gatorade-after-complaints/"}}{\fldrslt
\cf3 \ul \ulc3 spokesperson for the company}} explained BVO is used to distribute flavoring
more evenly so that it doesn\'92t collect at the surface and is only used in select
flavors.\ \
So what exactly makes this ingredient so harmful? According to a website called {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK
"http://whatisthatingredient.com/ingredient.php?id=65"}}{\fldrslt \cf3 \ul \ulc3 \'93What is that Ingredient?\'94}}
there are a few things:\ \
\'93Bromine is a halogen and displaces iodine, which may depress thyroid function,\'94\
\ Several cases prior to 1975 including sedatives
containing bromine resulted side effects of \b depression, hallucinations, violent tendencies,
tremors, tendon reflex changes \b0 and several other unappealing side effects.\
\ And Gatorade isn\'92t the only drink it can
be found in. {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK "http://consumerist.com/2013/01/25/gatorade-agrees-to-remove-controversial-ingredient-denies-its-because-of-teens-campaign/"}}{\fldrslt
\cf3 \ul \ulc3 The Consumerist}} says the ingredient is listed in Mountain Dew and even
rival company Coca-Cola products like Fanta and certain Powerades.\
\ And a blogger for {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK
"http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/25/gatorade-listens-to-a-teen-and-changes-its-formula/"}}{\fldrslt \cf3 \ul \ulc3 The New York Times}} reports
BVO can be found in about 10 percent of drinks sold in the U.S.\
\ BVO will be swapped for {\field{\*\fldinst{HYPERLINK

called sucrose acetate isobutyrate, used internationally by the company. Gatorade spokeswoman Molly
Carter says the drinks with the new ingredient will reportedly be distributed over the next
few months.\ }
