My name is Steve Sexson, I'm an orthopaedic surgeon. The name of my practice is North
River Cross Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and it's located in Noblesville. What's unique
about our practice is that we really have a hands-on type of approach. It's only me
in the practice, and so I spend all the time, along with my physician assistant, with patients.
We tend to spend a lot more time with the patients than some practices, because we just
think that's important to us. It seems to make for a much better quality of care encounter,
both non-surgically and surgically.
Another unique aspect of our practice is that we serve as the northern access point for
those patients in Hamilton County who need a close-to-home option for orthopaedic care.
We're able to do this because we use the Indiana Surgery Center Noblesville for our outpatient
care and we use Community Hospital North for our inpatient care. We're also really excited
about the new center at the Hamilton Health Pavilion where they have new imaging and also
physical therapy. It's a great option for us and for our patients.
Well my practice specializes in, primarily, arthroscopic procedures as well as joint replacement.
We do arthroscopy of the shoulder, of the knee and of the ankle. We do hip, knee and
shoulder replacements as well. And we also do basic fracture care for both adults and
children and anybody in between. We also do some basic hand work, like carpal tunnel releases
and such. But what we really like to do, what's really near and dear to my heart, is the sports
medicine. I did a fellowship down in Cincinnati; I got a chance to work with the Reds and the
Bengals for a year, and I got to learn a lot of things about sports medicine. And that's
really what I like to do the most. I've been a team physician for over 20 years. We're
really excited about this recent partnership that we have with Noblesville High School.
It's kind of Community's first foray into the sports medicine world and we're really
excited about it. We are the official team physicians of the Noblesville High School
and it's a AAAAA school so we're really busy out there. We had an exciting football season.
We're heading into the winter sports with basketball and other sports, so it's really
fun and it's a really nice collaborative effort that we think is going to be successful in
the future.
One of the unique procedures that we do in our practice is arthroscopic rotator cuff
repair. In the past, it's always been done open, which creates a lot of tissue damage
and a lot more pain post-operatively. With arthroscopic techniques, you can make small
little incisions that limit the tissue damage and also limit the amount of pain that patients
have. We can do very difficult tears, despite doing it arthroscopically. We find that patients
really like the arthroscopic techniques. They tend to come back from them faster and they
have overall better results.
Well, I think the referring doctor should refer to us because I think we can give the
type of care that they would like to have themselves. We really specialize in that one-on-one
type of care. We can do a lot of the extra things that a lot of practices can't do because
they may be too busy with other things, but we can really spend a lot of time with our
patients and figure out what their needs are. We have a lot of follow-up with the referring
physicians as well so they know what's going on with their patients at all times.
It's really easy to access our practice. We have people on the phones all during the day.
You can access us on the Internet as well. We don't have scheduling yet, but we're working
on doing that. We also pride ourselves on the quick access. You can see us within 24
to 48 hours in most cases, and certainly not a two- to three-week wait that you might see
with other practices.
Well, I've recently become employed by Community Hospitals because I've had a lot of vast experience
with them over the last 10 years. I was one of the founding members of the Indiana Surgery
Center in Noblesville and we've had a really successful run there and it's a very high-quality
institution. And through that, Community has been my partner and I thought that it would
be a natural transition to become employed by them. I really like their approach to medicine
and patients. It's a very quality-driven organization and they always say "yes." They're always
gonna find a way to make things happen--they're very collaborative. And I really like that.
That's really one of the outstanding attributes of Community Hospitals that I think makes
it important to be a partner with them.
