Hello. My name is Lizzie Baily and I'm 29.
I have congenital Muscular Dystrophy
and I use an electric wheelchair at all times.
I have three jobs:
my paid job is as a Learning Support Assistant
at a local primary school
on three afternoons a week.
Another job I have
is as the Chairman of a local charity called Wellspring West Sussex
which is for families with children with special needs and disabilities.
I have also set up my own local craft club
which I run in the art studio in our garden.
The main barriers I have had to overcome
were at the time when I was looking
at which course I wanted to do for my degree.
I looked at various universities
and had to overcome
the members of staff telling me that certain courses weren't right
because of my disabilities.
I feel that my greatest achievement
is that I'm actually in the job ]that I've always wanted to do
because ever since I was a child I have wanted to teach.
I'm also extremely proud
that I've set up my own craft club
which I run in an art studio here on a Saturday afternoon.
My advice to young disabled people
looking at what they would like to do in the future
is to basically go for it:
don't let anybody hold you back
because of what they think is not possible.
Anything is possible with the right help
and the use of the internet and other technology
to help your physical difficulties.
Good luck!
