>> Mike Since outdoor clothing has become sort of fashionable some products seemed have
been designed to be just that.
>> Mike [voice over] But the mountains don't care what you look like down the pub. And
its here that equipment that is designed to help them on counts. Its here all the details
matter. Here the equipment technology development in the response to the requirements of climbers,
walkers and mountaineers over the last 30 years proves itself. Its here that equipment
from companies like Rab comes into its own.
Rab was started by mountaineer Rab Carrington to satisfy the needs of a new breed of light
weight alpinist. From a single room in Sheffield, he started setting an entirely new standard
with a quality down products, for which the company became famous for and today they are
one of the very few companies that still fill their high end down products in the UK.
Rab is known for innovation. They were the first outdoor company to start using the now
ubiqtious perptex fabric and have worked with perplex to develop products like perptex equilibrium
(a key part of their innovative multi-layer vaporise clothing range)
Their waterproof hard shells use use the e-vent membrane. With the highest breathability of
any waterproof fabric, as we showed last time in the gym.
Mike>> They have stayed true to an ethos on producing a concise range of focussed technical
products, but producing them really really well. Their insulated products made them rightly
famous. And today whether your setting out for the Alps or a weekend in Snowdonia, RAB
products are something to rely on. We will be covering down in our big down show down
next month, but here is a closer look at some of their other products.
Mike>> So the vaporise material that makes up the trousers and this soft shell is a really
impressive fabric. Look at the beeding.
And this is the same with the trousers, its go this soft inner layer it works under a
broader range of conditions, so you don't have to keep changing up and changing down
layers necessarily as you go up the mountains.
The trousers there's big pockets and they've got zips on them, and I've lost so many things
out of them..
>> Ollie: I've even lost my car keys up Scarfell..
>> Mike: Is that a true story?
>> Ollie: True story. Yer
>> Mike: There are just some really nice details on them. I like how high the kneck baffle
goes. Its got a hood , so you can wear a helmet with it. We've got these really big pockets
in them and there placed in a position when wearing your ruck sack, you can still get
access to the pockets, even if you've got your waist strap on. Also the pockets are
big enough for your hands
Also big enough to fit a map in. Loads of room in there for a map.
If you want some sweets, we've got some barely sugar
Toffee bon bons.
Ollie does like a snack. Rhubarb and custard.
One of my personal favourites Vanilla fudge. Another excellent choice Ollie.
How about some Welsh cakes? We are in Wales after all. Put them down the side
>> Ollie They may turn to crumbs.
>> Mike Welsh crumbs
Right, you do look a bit lot lop sided. There is a lot of room in those pockets
>> Mike [voice over] No zips are 100% waterproof. So you will notice there is another baffle
on the inside designed to catch any water that makes it through, which feeds down to
a little drain hole at the bottom. I like details like that.
I think we should do a breathability test on the vaporise because its a double layer
fabric you alway feel quite warm. It feels like that if your going to work hard you might
sweat and if it doesn't breath well its going to starting feeling really uncomfortable on
the insides
[Ollie runs up a hill]
>> Ollie: [Panting]
>> Mike: How are you feeling? I want feel the inside. Right, vaporise . It is still
dry on the inside
>> Ollie: My problem
>> Mike: You alright?
>> Ollie: I had some welsh cake before coming up.. Im just going to run up the hill now..
>> Mike: Ok see you at the top .. Of you go.. You obviously weren't working hard enough
first time around
[Ollie Jumps & falls]
>> Mike: Thais is what I have to work with every
>> Mike [voice over] As you can probably tell Rab is one of my favourite outdoor manufactures.
I've personally relied on their products where from the Lakes to the Tian Shan mountains
in Kyrgyzstan - but thats another story.
