Parents want to know if there is such a thing as a treatment for dyslexia that is better
than another. Another way of asking that question is, are there treatments for dyslexia that
are not effective? And the simplest way to answer that question is, any treatment that
does not directly address the problem is bound to be either completely ineffective, or only
marginally effective. Let's think about the problem that a child or an adult with dyslexia
has. The problem has to do with isolating sounds and words in language. Matching those
sounds and words to the printed form, and recalling those things that are stored in
memory as words when reading connected text or passages. Any treatment that does not directly
address these sub-skills that relate to accuracy and fluency, or significant skill in reading
and spelling, can have, at best, limited effect. And more often than not, no effect at all
on the reading problem, per se.
