I was trying to decide what
to say about Greater Madison
and I was talking to someone
and they reminded me that
GreaterMadison is four decades old.
Well, Harrisonburg has changed,
JMU has changed and we've all changed.
With that change we had to redefine
what Greater Madison was.
After years, several years of
discussion and a whole lot of planning,
Greater Madison has changed.
And Greater Madison is now in
existence to develop a
mutually beneficial relationship between
Harrisonburg, Rockingham County
and the JMU community.
What a great time for Greater Madison
to sort of be in its second year of
new evolution to coincide so much
with the new president who is having
a forum and inviting the public in,
not the big public, but our public
and I think it's just a great time
for all of us to share that opportunity.
So, as we move forward Greater Madison
is going do greater things and
Greater Madison is incidentally
even has a student Greater Madison now.
And they host an event in
the spring called the Big Event
and actually last year some of the
alumni association groups partnered
with student Greater Madison and
in their communities, whether it be
Richmond or Washington or wherever,
on the day the Big Event was held,
which is a community day of
service here in our area.
Those alumni groups participated with us.
So, we have evolved quite a bit;
we've evolved to the point
that this year we gave seven
$2,000 scholarships to students
in our area high schools
that are going to JMU.
We have a great opportunity to
take advantage of our community,
understand our community,
the JMU community, better and
involve our citizens in this area,
as I say it has changed considerably
and for those that are here tonight
I know looking in the crowd
there probably a couple people here
that have been members for 40years
so we appreciate you sticking with us.
For those that haven't,
I invite you to join us as we embark
on a new Greater Madison experience
and I think one that will
be beneficial to the communities
that I mentioned previously.
Thank you so much.
