Hi, I’m Riley Roam and one of our most popular projects that we did in the teen workshop
for the summer reading program this year was the duct tape beach bag.
This is a really fun project. Teens like making stuff out of duct tape
but this is a really easy duct tape project because you use a garbage bag as the base.
I had a lot of people asking me how I did this.
So I’m going to show you how I did it today.
Now what you’re going to need is obviously some duct tape,
and it’s nice to use two different colors, you don’t have to. You can use all one color if you want.
But I think that the multi colors give it a nice beachy look.
I’m going to use turquoise instead of the purple. You need a pair of scissors,
you need a sharpie and you need the garbage bag. Now it does not have to be a white garbage bag
although it makes it easier because you are going draw on it. And it gives it a little bit of an outline.
But you can use a black garbage bag or something else we are going to talk about a little bit later.
You’re also going to use a measuring stick or a yard stick or a measuring tape.
So the first thing you are going to do it take your garbage bag
and you are going to cut it open so it’s like a sheet.
Now don’t worry about being precise at this point.
You’re just opening it up.
So you are going to have a sheet like that.
And you are going to stretch it out.
And it’s good to take this seam part
and make that the bumpy part on the bottom.
So you are going to put your duct tape on top of that
and then when you fold it that will be the inside.
So what we’re going to do is I already have this laid out on the table.
You’re going to stretch out your sheet and you’re going to tape it down
so you can have a nice flat work space.
Then you’re going take your yard stick or your tape measure.
and you’re going to measure out a rectangle.
now it’s up to you how big you want to do this.
It can be whatever size you want. To make the nice beach bag size that I did
it’s about thirty inches by about sixteen or seventeen inches
so I have already laid out my rectangle
and then you are just going to start taping the duct tape.
And you are going to want to do it in layers. You’re going to want to overlap it a little bit.

Now once you have all your stripes down.
Make sure it‘s all down nicely.
And then you can untape your bag from your table or work space
and you can see your rectangle.
So that’s way you want to have the overlap.
So I’m going to now take my scissors and cut out the rectangle.
[background music]
And keep in mind when you are measuring your rectangle,
it’s a good idea to try to make that seam the center.
Try to do that when you’re measuring
because now what we are going to do is take that rectangle and fold it in half.
make sure everything lines up. And there we go it folds in half.
So that’s going to be the base for our bag. Actually you can unfold it again
because before we even fold the whole thing up we are going to finish these edges.
So you are just going to take these edges and fold them over
and you take another piece of duct tape and tape it down.
[background music]
Ok so I have taped down my edges, so now I’m going to fold the whole thing in half.
I have my nice neat edges and now what I have to do is just seal up these edges.
[background music]
Alright we’re almost there. Our beach bag. Now if you want to do handles.
I’m going to make two handles do the tape about that big. [background music]
And I am going to take this and fold it in half.
This is where the duct tape gets tricky because it really wants to stick back on itself
But don’t worry so much about whether you’re being exact there either
because we are going to do another piece of tape.
I am going to take a piece that I folded I’m going to stick on this piece
and then fold this over.
There’s the handle.
Now you can do two handles like that. I’m going to do just a nice short handle
and do it from one side to the other side.
And I’m going to take some more tape now,
and this is where I’m just going to kind of finish it off inside.
[background music]
Alright, I’m going to try and do it this way so you can see it and I’m going to do it upside down.

There’s a little beach bag. It’s so easy it’s so much fun. I would say it takes about,
once you get comfortable with it, it takes about half an hour or forty-five minutes.
It depends on how elaborate you want to get. This was also made with a garbage bag.
This was made by an eleven year old
and she decided to make it that shape.
She just did a different size rectangle and she had this cool,
I couldn’t find this kind of duct tape but this is zebra duct tape.
She also decided to duct tape the other side. So that it was really nice and sturdy inside.
You can do that if you’d like. But I thought that was a cool shape.
And this is another thing that you can do; this one is pink and black;
it’s obviously a different shape. But it uses a different base;
it uses a zip lock bag as a base.
Which is a really, really good thing to do,
you’re not necessarily making a beach bag it’s more of a purse.
And this is really not the right zip lock, you can use this kind of zip lock where you press it.
But it’s great if you can find the kind that actually has the zipper.
Because then you have a closer on it.
And you can zip it up. And you don’t even need to cut the bag
you can just put the tape right over the bag,
and there you have a nice cool little purse.
Also it‘s fun if you do all one color duct tape and then you can cut out cool little shapes
and you can do a whole design and you decorate your bag however you want.
So this was an idea sent in by a librarian in Louisiana, Stephanie Wilkes
and look how cute the bag she made is. The little crab, I love it. So you can do whatever you want.
There are so many things you can do and for boys you know
their probably not going to want to make a beach bag or a purse.
Maybe they do but you can do the duct tape wallet. We are not going to do that today
but if you go to the FLYP website there are directions to make a duct tape wallet.
So have fun, enjoy, and have a great summer.
