Hi Eric with Rockin H Farm Toys. Today I'm going to teach you how to
Hey Eric, How do you remove a sleeper from a DCP truck?
Hey Eric, How do you remove the steering tires from DCP truck?
I'll get to that in a few moments, today I'm going to teach you how strip down a DCP truck
to the frame. Everything you need to know including the tools you'll need plus the tips
you tricks to get this thing apart to do custom work to it will all be explained shortly.
So let's go over and watch this video.
To take apart your DCP truck I recommend the following tools.
An exacto knife
small phillips head screw driver small flat head screw driver
one the coolest tools I own a jewelers side cutter
needle nose pliar drill with a small bit such as 1/8"
and of course, a truck In this tutorial I will remove the parts with
the intention of reusing them on something else. If the parts are to be discarded less
care is needed when removing them. I'll start at the back and work forward.
Beginning with the rear mudflaps, take the drill and remove the mushroomed diecast. Use
an exacto knife or small screw driver to pry up the plastic.
Remove the 5th wheel plate by prying with a small screw driver. The headache rack removes
the same way. If the airlines do not come off gently wiggle them loose. Or cut them
if necessary. The mudflaps come off easily with the side
cutters. Sometime they are removed clean and other time they break at the frame.
Use the small phillips screw driver to remove the sleeper. If the sleeper does not fall
off gently wiggle it loose. The fuel tanks come off by gently prying with
the flat head screw driver. I use a twisting action.
The ladder I brake off.
The cab is removed by one phillips screw. It too make need gently rocking action to
break free. Remove the air breathers with the sidecutters
screwdriver or exacto knife. Pry gently and they should come off clean.
The mirrors can be removed with the sidecutters. A DCP new in the box comes with an extra set
of mirrors so do as you wish. These did not come off clean.
The exhaust pipes remove easily with the side cutters.
The air horns sometimes come off easy, sometimes not. Depends on how much glue was used in
China. I broke one of these. The bottom of the cab has a flat plate that
needs to be removed. Pry it up with an exacto knife or small screw driver. It should pop
right out. The interior will pry easily with an exacto
knife. If it does not pop out easy run your knife between the interior and diecast.
The door panels remove by gently prying with an exacto knife. I started on the passenger
side. The driver side door panel and head liner
came out in one piece on the cab. The windshield pushes out from the back to
the front. The visor is attached with plastic pins that
can be seen on the inside of the cab. I take my phillips and push the pins to remove it.
Use a drill to remove the mushroomed diecast that hold the cab top on. Take an exacto knife
to pry up the cab top. Be careful not scuff the paint in planning to reuse the cab top.
Moving back to the chassis, the rest of the exhaust can be pried up with the tool of choice.
The steps I remove by breaking them off. The bumper can be pried off by twisting a
flat head screw driver between the frame and bumper.
The hood can be remove by using the side cutters and squeezing between the diecast and the
pin. Once started the pin can be worked out. Be careful as the diecast can break.
Remove the grill by sliding an exacto knife between the hood and grill. Twist gently on
each side. When I remove the fenders I wrap them in cloth
or napkin to prevent scratch the fenders with the pliars. Especially if I on doing a fender
swap and do not intend to repaint them. Grab the cloth wrapped fender with a pliars and
wiggle gently. If one of the dieast pins breaks off in the hood, drill that part out.
The engine can be pried up with a screw driver. The radiator can be broken off.
The steering tires can be removed with the sidecutters. I push the side cutters between
the frame and wheel with the flat side against frame. Squeeze the side cutters closed to
work the wheel off the pin. Pull the wheel the rest of the way off.
The rear wheels can be removed the same way. An alternative to side cutters is a slick
tool sold by Harrison Custom Minis Remove the drive line and the axle house with
a screwdriver The suspension can be removed with a needle
nose pliars. The different makes of DCP trucks have different suspension styles.
