Are you struggling with a duck hook and wondering what you can do to fix it? This is Sean McTernan
and you are watching another episode of My Golf Tutor, the number one place on the internet
for you to play your best golf now. Welcome back and todays question comes from Neal and
Neal wrote, hi Sean I have been struggling lately with my driver. I have been hitting
a duck hook, I would love to be able to hit the ball a little straighter. Do you have
any suggestions to help me out? Thanks very much for your question, there is one thing
I would like to bring to your attention before we get started. That is the importance of
where you are striking the ball on the face. I would like you to get some Doctor Schols
foot spray or a dry erase marker. I want you to cover the face and hit a few shots. I want
to make sure you are not catching the ball out on the toe. Because if you are that is
going to be a major contributing factor to why you are struggling with a duck hook. That
being said if you find you are striking it out of the middle then I am going to use these
alignment rides to explain to you whats going on. I am going to use these alignment rods
to illustrate what I believe is going on. This club on the ground is going to be our
target line. Whats happening is when you are hitting a duck hook, first of all you said
the ball is starting left, so this is going to be our face. Our club face at impact is
pointing to the left of our target line. Now what is causing our ball to curve so violently
is because our path is so far to the right. The greater the difference between these two
the more the ball is going to curve. What we are going to have to do is , we are going
to have to get the two of these closer together. What I mean by that is first of all we are
going to have to get our path going a little more around and get our club face going towards
where we want the ball to start. I find with a lot of my students when they come for a
lesson and they are struggling with this type of shot. They see the ball going left and
their instinct is to push the club and path out even more and more. Unfortunately, this
makes it even worse because like I said the greater the difference between our face and
path the more the ball is going to curve. I have a drill we are going to work on, first
of all we are going to attack the path and then we are going to address the face. So
there are two aspects of this drill I want to talk about. The first thing is this head
cover is going to help us control the path. I believe whats happening to you is when you
are swinging and your club is coming down towards the ball and when it hits its going
to far out to the right. First of all we are going to address is getting the path come
more around you and so it will miss this head cover on the way through. Initially what I
think you will find is that you are going to hit some pulls because your club face is
more than likely going to be closed. Over time the more and more you swing around you
I want you to actually feeling it stays more open. But, in reality it is pointing to where
you want the ball to start. What we are trying to do is bring the face and path to get them
closer together. We know that when the two are pretty much aligned at impact the ball
will fly straight because there won't be any curvature on it. One last time swing the club
left of the head cover and keep the face square to where you want the ball to start, that
will help get rid of your duck hook. If you or anyone else has any questions about your
