WHAT IS IT? Even by anglerfish standards, L. dinema is no looker. But what really sets it apart from the rest of the group are the appendages that adorn the luminescent tip of its enormous crane-like lure. These include a pair of long thread-like structures of unknown function (dinema translates as ‘two threads’).
WHERE IS IT? So far, three females have been caught. They were found in the Gulf of Mexico within 250km of the site of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, at depths that were heavily polluted by the disaster.
