Sago grubs
Sago grubs live in trunks of saguer palms that have fallen or been cut down for three months or so.
In other words, if a saguer palm has been cut, just wait till the inside part of the trunk is already rotten, there must be some grubs living there.
The biggest sago grubs are about the size of a man's thumb
Sago grubs can be a delicious meal.
Some people even like to eat them alive.
Many people say that sago grubs are very clean, because they just eat the liquid in the trunk of the saguer palm.
When we go hunting for sago grubs, we need to bring tools such as an axe, a machete, and bamboo or something to put the grubs in.
When you find the fallen trunk, the first thing to do is to knock or beat the trunk with the axe, then stick your ear to the trunk to listen if there is a sound like something is slicing or chewing.
If there is such a sound, then it’s sure that there are grubs inside the trunk.
After that, the bark of the trunk is peeled using an axe, and then the inside part is chopped with a big knife so the grubs can come out.
We should be careful when chopping so we don’t cut the grubs.
When taking out a grub, hold its body using the tip of your thumb and finger, don’t touch the head or you’ll get bitten.
Take them out and put them in the container.
Minahasan people, when cooking the grubs for a meal prepare a chili sauce with shallots, ginger and salt minced together.
The grubs are stuck on a bamboo skewer and roasted over flames.
When cooked, you can mix it with the minced spices.
This meal is best served with hot rice and sweet saguer (palm wine).
It tastes wonderful!
If the grubs are not taken or eaten, they will turn to cocoons and become beetles.
In the past, when there was no Playstation or internet games, children used to play with grubs.
They placed the grubs on the stem of banana leaves as a track, and made them race.
They also used to tie beetles' legs with a long thread, so when they flew away they could be caught easily by grabbing the thread. The beetles couldn’t fly far away anymore.
