Side Sleeper? Could an Orthopedic Pillow Help You Say Goodnight to Night-Time Discomfort?.
If you've ever had difficulty sleeping, you know that certain body positions during sleep
mean you will get no restful sleep during the night. It also means you will have stiff
muscles, crankiness and fatigue for the entire next day.
Sleeping on your stomach is sure to cause problems. Researchers have even linked sleeping
on the stomach with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in infants. And no one knows yet what sleeping
on the stomach does to adults, besides give them serious neck aches and headaches.
Sleep scientists report that up to two thirds of the population sleeps on their side in
bed. This position is better than sleeping on the stomach, but it has its share of disadvantages
if you use standard types of pillows. For example, if you sleep on your side, have
you:
• Ever woken up in the morning with shoulder pain? (Source: Medical Hypotheses, April 2010,
Sleep Position and Shoulder Pain.) • Found that sometimes you have numbness
or tingling of the arms, hands or fingers upon arising?
• Felt that your neck was crammed into the pillow all night long and is causing you ear
pain? • Noticed that your head seems to be more
forward than it should be when you stand up, sit or walk, and your exercise program isn't
improving it? • Wondered why you have marks on your eyelid
that won't go away for hours after arising? • Found that no position is comfortable
for your shoulder during sleep?
All these are signs that sleeping on your side in bed is occurring with the wrong type
of pillow. And they aren't the only signs. Tossing and turning during the night, waking
up with pain, and inability to get comfortable are clear signs that something is wrong with
your sleep position. Rushing for the painkillers when you wake up in the morning is another
sign, as is resorting to sleeping pills.
Most people really don't want to take medications to get a good night of sleep. They want a
simple solution - something that solves the problem.
That's where orthopedic pillows come into the picture. You can now find specific orthopedic
pillows that are designed for sleeping on your side.
When you sleep on your side, it's common for the neck to jut forward, causing the head
to be forward. This puts stress on your neck. The head can be heavy and cause undue pressure
on the ear or even traction out the eyelid causing saggy eyelids after awhile. You don't
need these!
The advantages to sleeping on your side with an orthopedic pillow are many:
• You can wake up rested, not tossing and turning all night long.
• Numbness, pain and tingling are not caused from sleeping anymore.
• Ear pain and odd lines on your face are nonexistent in the morning.
• Sleeping comfortably at night is not something that only happens occasionally - or in your
dreams. • Your posture during the daytime is upright
and straight.
Seriously consider an orthopedic pillow meant for sleeping on your side if you have any
problems whatsoever. Many have and have thought it was the best decision in their life.
