Panda and Penguin
In this video I am going to have a look at the recent changes in the Google Search Engine
Logarithms. These updates took effect on the 16th of April and are know as the Panda and
Penguin updates.
In this video you will learn why these updates have caused such a major shake up in the search
engine rankings and how you can recover if you have been hit.
There have been various different explanations for what these updates mean for internet marketing.
For this video I have analyzed and collated together the best information from the best
in the SEO business.
At the end of this presentation I offer a simple solution that has been working for
During my research I have found a lot of hate towards Google and making Google into something
to be beaten!
However, the way I look at it is that there is no point trying to declare war on Google.
Google is the very thing that brings you income in the form of traffic of targeted traffic.
Therefore we have to learn to play with google instead of beat it.
There have been suggestions these updates occurred because google wants to scare internet
marketers off trying to rank content on google. The logic is that Google wants to force people
onto google adwords and therefore make more money through advertising.
This maybe true, but I also know that google is ultra secretive and therefore everything
I have learnt about these updates has been speculative.
What I do know is simple. As an internet marketer the focus shouldn't be about trying to beat
google. The goal is about providing valuable information that solves problems for your
target market.
The best thing about focusing on delivering quality for your niche is that when you please
the people you are trying to reach you will actually be giving google exactly what it
wants.
The internet as a whole is becoming more and more social. If you have valuable relevant
content for a group of people who are looking for it then it will be found by them in one
way or another.
The new updates and I assume the ones to come in the future will be increasingly geared
towards user satisfaction. Now is the time to stop declaring war on google and start
providing quality information for those in need of it.
So once you have quality content there are certain things you can do to ensure that google
will rank it highly for you.
To do this I will now take a look at how google decides to rank information and the new steps
to take to avoid getting a spam flag.
Firstly though, lets quickly take a look at the two main reasons you may have been experiencing
plummeting search engine rankings.
The first reason is that if you abused the on page seo factors I will discuss soon then
you received a penalty. This penalty is proportional to how abusive you were in googles eyes.
The second factor in the fall in ranking is due to the backlinks your site is receiving.
The google updates have affected many sites that were previously used as places to get
quality backlinks. Google deindexed a lot of sites recently, especially blog networks.
This means that overnight sites lost a good proportion of their backlinking profile. If
you are in this boat then you will also be affected.
Now lets take a look at the two major factors bases its rankings on - On page SEO and Off
page SEO
On Page SEO includes all the things you do on your site. some of the important On page
SEO factors are
The layout of your site, Your meta information like Titles, Descriptions
and Tags The layout of your content, the amount of
text on your page and the present of images and videos.
Keyword Density of the word you are trying to rank for in your post.
The best information I have discovered during my research for on page search engine optimization
in a post penguin world is the following.
Stop over optimizing your site. Remember that google is really really smart. If you have
content based on a topic or keyword phrase then you can be sure google knows about it.
Avoid keyword stuffing. This includes in your in your content. Josh
from SE nuke recommends no more than 4%, Also avoid keyword stuffing in your Meta information
such as titles, tags and description.
The take away point here is to write content for human readers. An article should be easily
readable for your visitor.
The big theme I took from the google updates and the second step of on page seo is that
google wants to send people to sites that people have a good experience at.
Remember, the goal of google is to provide the most relevant search results when people
do a google search for a topic. If google can't provide this then people will
transfer over to the yahoo and bing search engines.
It is suggested that the way goggle determines if people have a good user experience on your
site is by two process.
The first involves 2 major factors that tells google if people like your site.
They are average time users spend on your site and the bounce rate.
The way to increase the amount of time people spend on your site is to provide quality as
I have already suggested.
Along with text, you should also include diverse multimedia on your sites like a podcasts,
video, images and pdf's. This insures that will people hang around for longer.
A bounce rate is the percentage of people who exit from the same page they entered on.
To minimize bounce rates, check the load speed for your site. If your site loads to slowly
then people will be clicking off it because people are impatient and therefore this will
increase your bounce rate.
Another way to reduce bounce rates while at the same time increasing user time on your
site is to write posts on related topics instead of narrowly focused keywords.
The old way was to optimize your site for targeted keywords. For example you would choose
a keyword such as "make money online" and then write articles on a keywords related
tightly to that original keyword.
This might include writing 3 articles such as "how to make money online" "different ways
to make money online" "make money online today."
The problem with this is it is very generic and doesn't encourage people to browse round
your site.
Instead you could write 3 articles on topics related to making money online such as "Learn
how To Trade the Forex for passive income" "Is Internet Marketing the new Goldrush?"
and "Does eBay hold the key to online riches?"
The final step to reduce bounce rates and increase user time is to add hyperlinks in
your post that link to other related topic articles on your site. This ensures people
will exit your site from another page and also spend longer on your site.
The second way I learnt that google can tell user satisfaction on your website is by analyzing
social signals. Remember google is all about make sure people are getting to the right
place from its search engine.
And the easiest way to determine that for google is from people who have already been
there. Google gets this information for use likability from how often your content is
shared.
The theory goes that if your content is worth sharing then according to google people must
like it.
Therefore it is vital you give people this option to share your content when they are
on your site. The plugins I was recommended by James Schramko to add to my wordpress site
for this purpose are
Tweetme G +
Pinit and Fblike
Now lets have a look at the second piece of the puzzle for playing with google in an post
panda world.
This is the off page seo factors.
Basically put, off page seo is all about the number of backlinks that are pointing to your
site. This side of the google ranking equation is all about how popular your site is.
Google determines how popular your site is by how many other sites on the internet are
pointing back to your website - hence the name backlinks.
However not all links are created equally. The most important factor of the quality of
the back link is the quality of the site linking back to the site you are getting ranked for.
What people have found since the latest google updates is that their search engine rankings
decreased even if their main site did the on page SEO right.
The problem was that the sites that were linking to them got penalized because they abused
those Onpage factors. Therefore the value of the link that was pointing to the site
they wanted to be ranked was decreased.
This meant their rankings for that site began to slide. This is what happen with the de-
indexing of the major blog networks.
The way to moved forward now in regards to your off page seo to make sure your backlinks
have anchor text variety and a diverse back link portfolio.
Your back link anchor text are the words contained in the hyper link on an external site that
point back to yours. These words tell google what your site is about. However it is important
to get it right. The breakdown for your back link anchor text profile should be the the
following:
30% should be exact keywords. This is where all the words are in the correct order with
no words between them. Using the above example I mentioned earlier the exact keyword for
ranking make money online is "make money online."
30% should be phrase keywords. This is where the words are contained in the hyperlink but
don't need to be in the same order. "Make lots more money online" would be one such
phrase anchor text keyword.
30% should be your domain name. This is simply www.yoursite.com as the anchor text.
10% show be generic keywords - These are words like CLICK HERE and READ MORE HERE.
The final step to take for search engine ranking is to make sure you get a good variety of
quality places where you are getting backlinks from.
The real theme I noticed for the best places it is now suggested to get your backlinks
from are web 2.0 properties.
Places like hub pages and squdio lens are very powerful and well trusted by google.
Again though, it is important that these satellite sites are populated with high quality content
for this strategy to work.
I have discover a simply strategy to bypass a lot of these google updates and get ranking
on top of google very fast and inexpensively.
