Armour tests of Helicopter Mi-28A
The helicopter Mi-28 is equipped with armor to provide protection for the crew
against Armour Piercing projectiles, of all existing calibres,
fragmentation of Surface to Air Missiles and splitters of High-Explosive-Fragmentation and Incendiary warheads.
The helicopter uses composite armour, consisted of ceramic and metalic materials,
which significantly provide more protection and is superior to all known armour types among his peers.
welche signifikant im Schutz seines gleichen, aller anderen bekannten Panzerungsarten überlegen ist
Also, for the first time in the World the Mi-28A, was fitted with fully armored glass.
While the multilayered bulletproof glass, of both cabins,
provides slightly less protection compared to the "non-transparent" armor
Infront of you stands the cockpit which was selected for protection tests.
First shot, with an Armor Piercing bullet with the calibre 7.62mm.
Replay of the moment
No Penetration, the bulletproof glass has many cracks
The check shows that the glass can withstand one more hit
Despite the cracks the visibility is sufficient
Second shot with Armor Piercing with the calibre 12.7mm
This is by far more powerful projectile
The bulletproof glass wasn't penetrated
A preperation of shooting with a 3 gram (46.29 grains) high velocity splinters against the frontal bulletproof glass,
the prior damaged glass through 7.62mm calibre.
The glass could withstand even a second hit
You see the effect of an Armor Piercing projectile
of the calibre 7.62mm against the side windshield
The windshield was not penetrated
Sufficient visibility
Second bulletproof glass
Projectile of the calibre 12.7mm
The windshield has withstood and the visibility is sufficient
Another shot against the damaged windshield
Projectile 7.62mm
The bulletproof glass withstood the impact this time as well
Now a replay of the moment
Side windshield of frontal cabin
Two shots with Armor Piercing ammuniton of 7.62mm calibre
The glass was not penetrated
The visibility is sufficient
3 Shots are prepared for the side windshield with high velocity splinters
First shot
Second shot
Third shot
The bulletproof glass was not penetrated this time too
Thus the test-phase of the windshield protection is completed
They proved their high-quality protective abilities
The bullet proof glass of Mi-28
Let's pass to the tests of the "non-transparent" armor
The result after effect of 3 gram (46.29 grain) high velocity splinter impacts
Armor Piercing bullet calibre 7.62mm
Again a 3 gram (46.29 grain) heavy splinter
And this is the effect of an Armor Piercing bullet 12.7mm calibre
A preparation follows of a shot against the board side armor
with an Armor Piercing bullet, calibre 12.7mm
Replay of the moment
No penetration
The impact zone of the 12.7mm bullet has left minor damage at the top layer of the armor
From the inside a small bump is visible No cracks, the airtight properties of the cabin were not compromised
A series of 4 shots follows with Armor Piercing ammunition of the calibre 12.7mm
A positive result, no penetrations occured The damage of the top armor layer is minor
Another shot with Armor Piercing bullet, calibre 7.62mm
This result is positive too
The "non-transparent" composite armor has succesfully withstood the shooting test
of the armor piercing ammunition and high velocity splinters
Let's pass to the armor test-phase of the Mi-28 cabin against the 20mm cannon
with High-Explosive-Fragmentation projectiles
Caution !
Replay of the moment
The armor has withstood the hit
From inside of the armor a small bump is visible
There are no cracks
The damage of the top armor layer is marginal
Now two shots against right board side
First shot
Second shot
There are marks of the fragments of the projectile
after impact of the exterior cladding on the armor surface
Another two shots on the left board side
with High-Explosive-Fragmentational and incendiary ammunition, calibre 20mm
First Shot
Second Shot
And at this time the armor could withstand the hits
Another shooting with 20mm projectiles
The exterior caddling is marginally damaged
The splinters of the projectile have not penetrated into the cockpit
Another shot of 20mm projectile against the cabin
The armor withstood the hit this time as well
The display panel is undamaged
The tests are finished
Almost 70 shots were fired overall against the helicopter's cabin
9 hits with High-Explosive-Fragmentational ammunition of 20mm cannon.
22 hits with Armor Piercing Incendiary ammunition of 12.7mm calibre.
22 hits with high velocity splinters of HE-Frag missiles.
15 hits with Armor Piercing ammunition of 7.62mm calibre
And in all tries of the helicopter Mi-28 the armor has proved its reliability
