The objective that was finally set for the Altiplano 43 mm
was to break two records at the same time:
the world’s thinnest automatic watch
and the world’s thinnest automatic movement.
And we achieved both:
the watch has a thickness of 5.25 mm
and the movement has a thickness of 2.35 mm.
When you announce a double record, you have to be sure that it really is one.
So we had to ask ourselves:
how are we going to build the watch
so that it meets this objective we’ve been given?
Obviously, it meant we had to work
in an extremely small volume
and the result is that, today, many elements in the movement
are thinner than a human hair.
To produce the world’s thinnest watch
we had to improve all the interfaces
between the movement and the external parts.
This is what makes you realize that, in a way,
technical requirements are part of design.
Elegance is the essence of this product
because of its thinness.
And the watch is very thin
because the movement itself is very thin.
Always trying to reduce thickness is one of the basic elements in Piaget’s DNA.
Today, it’s really all about synergy
between the case and the watch movement.
In this project we have benefited
from the knowledge and experience
of ultra-thinness in Piaget’s DNA.
It’s all the history and expertise
that have made this watch possible.
