we are coming back now this is a debate
that i think is incredibly important for us
in Washington DC because our city as you know
rich and I both live in Washington DC
if you know that we are currently in the district right now taping his program
our studios in the city exactly so
last week during halftime
at the national Football League's game
between the Dallas Cowboys up
but somehow I spoke on the phone talking about
they're both in the NFC East their rivals das Cowboys Washington Redskins
they're playing
and NBC Sports anchor this guy's been around for a while
he is I'm a fan of them there are some other anchors
I'm not as big a fan is a fan of but I'm not going to get into that right not
that the whole nother segment om
Bob Costas called out the DC's team them in this is
a conversation that has really come up you know it's it's been an issue in the
district for
years but we've really been here you come to the forefront in getting some
national press recently
so he said that that name
the Washington Redskins is a slur and
he was quoted as saying on-air during the football game
these hoes generally don't use you now
there announcer share as a pedestal
om but he said ask yourself what the equipment would be if this was directed
towards african-americans
hispanics or asians for any members have another ethnic group
we consider that way Redskins can't possibly on our heritage or noble
character trait
in so a slur no matter how benign the present-day
intent Richard I wanna now
where do you stand on the Redskins name actually
you don't have to say anything elizabeth is only this week I'll
about the same thing in I think the rescue change your name
all I think it is a slur I think when the team was created
on was created by very person who had our bigotry hatred in his heart
to the point where the Redskins in integrated on others
but the rest in the integrate until now the nineteen sixties when the kennedys
became the presidency in when jack kennedy was
home attorney general when he said we will allow the plane to ship columbia
miss you integrated team
so the rest the history of segregation don't get me wrong I think what you said
now the bills were there tonight at this point in time
but with his aggregation and I think this team is a change in a min re
correct read and correct the wrongs of the past and
right now I'm with you on that one and I think
or to make two points here 1
the president's are to come out saying
that sport-related it's a horrible name om
we've seen other names change that are considered inappropriate over the course
are we are the last couple decades comin
the most important thing and I think that this is the the be all end of the
issue
Native American tribes from across the country have come out saying
that this is a terrible term we condemn it they protest it and they're called
upon the NFL
to step in and change the name to the Redskins and
when the group is being affected
in you know there's their solo often
native americans are marginalized in our country and when you see them speaking
out
that'll really matters it's not about because
frankly there are many if
I don't know what the statistics are there not many Americans in Washington
DC
so I think that we're not really even in a position to talk about this
yeah it was the reservation to this report but I know right and it's not a
Heritage thing I mean
there's really no racist there's really no argument
that can be made other then it's the tradition in this is Artie the name
and probably a big probably there's a lot to do with
the merchandise you I think branding but I had invested into I'm here then I
guess is that there's been Redskins fan
but think about it this way arm on the you know the Gucci her
the coca for for the future 30 Apple
mom is the art bit that
when they change name they can resolve this new branding stuff like new
jersey's and so i think is when he made on both
and that it i finishing in a minute
on
p
on
now
