So, the International Day of the girl, Running Start got involved in the International Day
of the Girl this summer, we had, there was an activist in Washington D.C who came to
speak to our students at the close of our summer program and so we had 75 High School
students from around the states in a room. and this woman presented the idea that what
we need is to get the different states in America to buy into the International Day
of the Girl, to have it recognized in their states. And you know, usually you hire lobbyists
to lobby the state legislator to get things passed, and this idea was totally different
- she was asking the girls to lobby their states and themselves and a good number of
them have signed up and they are petitioning, you know, writing petitions, they're going
in and meeting their representatives and we really had a fabulous response, and you know,
it is only 1 day, but I think it's very important to recognize girls and the fact that I think
the world is waking up to the idea that empowering young women and girls and finally really paying
attention to the importance of educating them and raising them up, is something that the
entire world needs to care about, because the end result is so strong and will strengthen
society as a whole.
