Today is "Wear Blue Today"
So that we can increase the awareness
of the problem of colon cancer
and encourage people to get out and get screened.
Even if you don't have symptoms, if you're over 50 you need to get screened.
You need to ask your doctor to refer you
for the approriate screening.
That's what this whole event is about today.
We're also celebrating the good treatments that are available
when colon cancers are found.
The Brown Cancer Center has done wonderful things.
There are more treatments today than there ever were in the past.
My mother was a victim of colon cancer and she was not a survivor.
They didn't have these types of screenings
at that point and time.
So here I am as a young person
when she died, newly married
She never got to see my children. She never got to be the grandmother that I hoped she would be to my children.
So for me this is
as close to your heart as it can be.
So the more that we can make people aware, the more that we can talk about
diseases and how to prevent them
but then being aware
of methods that you can detect these types of diseases
then we'll have more survivors
This medical community here in Louisville, the University of Louisville Medical Center
is fantastic in what they're doing. Both in research and
and their dedication to public awareness.
