Ali Casqueiro: Welcome to Recreational Sports
at Oregon State University.
My name is Ali Casqueiro and I am the Membership Coordinator.
My purpose is to care for you
and connect you with the wellness resources
you want and need.
I am glad you stopped by and I am excited
to share with you about the facilities
and services offered to RecSports members.
Recreational Sports is a place of health and wellness,
and our mission is to foster healthy living.
We are open 117 hours a week, Monday through Sunday.
We offer classes, services, support,
and much more to help our members
reach their health and wellness goals.
We pride ourselves as being a place
of student growth and success.
We employ over 400 students each year
who run the day-to-day operations
of our facilities, teach fitness classes,
and are personal trainers, referees,
C.P.R. and First Aid trainers, and much more.
We are more than a fitness center or gym.
We are the hub of campus, with spaces for socializing,
learning, working, and student development.
There are two entrances to access Dixon Recreation Center.
The East Entry is located by the baseball field,
and the West Entry is located by the intramural fields.
If entering through Dixon's West Entry,
immediately to your left you will find
our Recreation Services desk.
Our employees at Recreation Services can assist you
with purchasing a membership, locker, Fit Pass,
or registering for classes, intramural sports and more.
The Sports Club and Intramural Sports office
is located in the Recreation Services lobby.
Here you can sign up to participate
in intramural sports as a team or a free agent.
If you are interested in competing at the sport club level,
our team of employees can help you
learn more about your options.
Students and members are all eligible
to participate in intramural leagues,
tournaments and special events.
Whether you're dealing with an injury,
or interested in making a positive change in your health,
Student Health Services at Dixon is here to help you.
You can make an appointment with an acupuncturist,
Athletic trainer, Chiropractor,
Health Coach, Massage Therapist,
Physical Therapist, Nutritionist,
or Sports Medicine Physician,
all located right here in Dixon Recreation Center.
Once you enter Dixon using your O.S.U. I.D. Card,
head to the Equipment Issue Desk.
Here you can rent, free of charge, day-use lockers,
towels, and all of the equipment
you will need to play various activities
in our facilities.
From basketballs to badminton rackets
and aqua-jogging belts to volleyballs,
Equipment Issue is your one-stop-shop.
Located on either side of the Equipment Issue desk
you will find our Men's and Women's locker rooms.
Here you can store your things in lockers,
take a hot shower,
use our built-in standing hair dryers
or enjoy a warm sauna.
Locker rooms lead directly to Steven's Natatorium.
In addition to our Men's and Women's locker rooms,
we have a large gender neutral private changing room.
This accessible changing room
also has a shower and restroom.
This room is located directly
next to an entrance to Steven's Natatorium.
Steven's Natatorium boasts an eight lane lap swim pool,
a dive well and a hot tub.
Swim on your own or participate in a kayak roll class,
a game of water basketball or family swim time.
We are also proud to host the O.S.U. women's swim meets.
Also located on the first floor of Dixon,
you will find one of our weight rooms.
The weight room features both weigh machines and free weights.
Our Recreational Sports staff
offer free 30 minute orientations of all cardio
and weight machines,
a great way to become familiar with equipment.
The fitness program at Recreational Sports
provides a variety of fun
and innovative programs to encourage
a healthy and active lifestyle.
We believe that each and every person
should have the opportunity to enjoy
physical activity and to do so in a safe
and supportive environment.
Some unique fitness programs and services
include group exercise classes ranging from yoga,
cycling, Body Pump and more.
We have nationally certified personal trainers
on staff to help you reach your fitness goals
and offer personal training individually,
with a partner or in a group setting.
Our Fitness Team also offers fitness evaluations,
like body composition assessments.
Energy conservation is important to us
and in our cardio rooms,
20 machines feed energy back into the grid.
Enough power is generated from members
exercising on these machines to operate one small home.
While working out on our machines,
you can tune into the many T.V. stations
that we have running on big screen T.V.s throughout the day.
Dixon Recreation Center is home to multiple athletic courts
and as a student or a member
you can participate in basketball, volleyball, badminton,
table tennis, racquetball and squash.
You can even reserve a court up to two-days in advance.
For the days when the weather is unfavorable,
we have made it our priority to make sure
you can keep up your fitness routine.
You can access our indoor track on the third floor of Dixon.
This one tenth of a mile track
allows our members to jog inside or take a stroll
during breaks and lunch
and the track is a great destination
for walking-meetings with colleagues.
On a clear day, you can see Mary's Peak,
the highest point in the coastal range, from the track.
Recreational Sports is the hub for outdoor adventure.
Our Adventure Leadership Institute is housed
on the east side of the building.
The adventure leadership institute,
referred to as A.L.I.,
is the authority in adventure leadership education,
providing awe-inspiring,
transformative experiences to O.S.U. students every year.
These students learn in the wildest
and most remote classrooms in the Pacific Northwest.
From the forest, to the high desert,
to the rugged cascade peaks and glaciers.
Graduates of this certificate program
are active leaders with lifelong leadership-oriented
and environmental ethics and outdoor skills.
A.L.I. also includes outdoor equipment rental,
maps, river and snow reports,
and the bike, ski, and snowboard shop.
Equipment rental is available to all
Recreational Sports students and members.
We offer rental equipment for a number of activities,
including backpacking, ice climbing, mountaineering,
rafting, rock climbing, bouldering and more.
Just across from the Adventure Leadership Institute
you will find one of our two indoor climbing centers.
Dixon's climbing wall is 42 and a half feet tall,
has a universally accessible rappel station,
top-rope climbing, bouldering caves,
hang boards, cracks, and overhangs.
All necessary equipment to climb is provided
for free check out to participants,
including harnesses, ropes, belay devices and carabiners.
We also offer climbing shoe rentals.
Belay skills check classes are offered
twice daily and bouldering is available
in the Climbing Center whenever the building is open
and there are not scheduled programs.
All Recreational Sports staff members are trained
in First Aid and C.P.R./A.E.D.
and strive to provide members,
guests and the O.S.U. community a safe environment.
The Safety Program provides opportunities
for our campus community to become
better prepared to respond in an emergency
by providing American Heart Association
first aid and C.P.R./A.E.D. training opportunities,
first aid kits and first aid supplies.
The Safety Staff act as first responders
for our Sport Club events
and are also available for special campus events.
As an added benefit of membership,
Recreational Sports members can receive discounted C.P.R.,
first aid and lifeguard training classes
from certified instructors.
Just outside of Dixon's West Entry is Student Legacy Park.
The features of this complex
include a park-like setting with three softball fields,
three full-size soccer fields, six intramural fields,
and a men's and women's lacrosse field.
These fields are covered by 330,000 feet
of Astroturf Gameday, the only turf of its kind.
S.L.P. is also home to the Tennis Complex
which houses four indoor courts and six outdoor courts.
The Pavilion has restrooms
and a covered gathering place.
And around the AstroTurf you will find
a walking and jogging path that is one third of a mile.
S.L.P. also has a full outdoor basketball court,
benches, picnic tables and drinking fountains.
S.L.P. is lit using our night lighting in the evening,
has a safety blue phone and has an integrated
video surveillance system with Dixon Recreation Center
and Outdoor Complex accessible by O.S.U. Public Safety
and Oregon State Police.
Located at Jefferson Avenue and Benton Way,
McAlexander Fieldhouse includes a multipurpose court,
turf field, rock climbing wall,
and a classroom providing space for a variety
of sports and activities.
The Fieldhouse is home to two basketball courts,
two volleyball courts and six badminton courts.
The indoor turf field is 100 feet by 95 feet
and the climbing wall is Recreational Sports' tallest,
at 43 feet.
Recreational Sports would like to encourage
and support the OSU community in pursuit
of physical activity and wellness.
Find the activities you enjoy
and people you enjoy being active with.
Play today, play tomorrow.
I have shared with you a lot about Recreational Sports
but to really get a feel for our facilities and services,
you've got to come check it out for yourself.
Drop by when you're in the Rec Sports neighborhood
or contact me directly for a tour or for more information.
I look forward to seeing you in Rec Sports soon!
