There are some approaches and lifestyle changes that can affect your risk for colon cancer.
Certainly if you're a smoker, as we discussed, tobacco can unfortunately raise your risk;
stopping smoking will be helpful. Obesity, sedentary lifestyle, the types of foods that
you eat, also can lower or affect your risk for colon cancer. One remedy, or drug that
we have studied, is aspirin — non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. We know that patients
that have to take these medications on a daily basis, one benefit is that they lower their
risk of colon cancer. We've also studied that patients who have had colon cancer, get chemotherapy,
and then are followed, if they take aspirin they lower their risk of the cancer coming
back. So in general it's recommended, or reasonable, to take aspirin, 81mg every day or 325mg two
or three times a week to affect the risk of colon cancer development.
