Speaker 1: College of Charleston. Joy: I like the idea of folding my professional
life into my life here at the college. For the last couple of years I have brought students
with me. One went on tour with me. He came out as our sound man and intern, so that he
could learn the business and get paid quite well (Laughs) and do a Union gig before he’d
gotten out of school. Last season I directed another national tour and so I thought, “If
I bring this student with me…” She and I went together and directed this National,
which was an extraordinary journey for both of us.
The set which I’m sitting on right now, which is part of our main stage season, was
designed by one of my students. I know that my colleagues and I spend a lot of one-on-one
time with our students, though we have a large number of majors and an ever increasing number
of minors. There’s a special beauty and a gift to come into an undergraduate program,
when you know that you have the opportunities over a four-year period to do the work that
you want to do.
