Hey folks, my name is Carl Mehaffey and I am a student at the University of Montana.
Right now, I'm volunteering here at Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge
in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley.
I want to get you fired up to present your bold ideas
for the future of the Refuge System.
So, here is a quote from the father of the Refuge System, President Theodore Roosevelt, 1910:
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles,
or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,
whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly;
ho errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming;
but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions;
who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement,
and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly,
so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
So to get us started, our bold idea here at Lee Metcalf
is to engage all Americans in conservation.
We want to work with Refuges, private citizens, companies, to establish
what is known as Refuge outposts, which is, essentially,
patches of habitat, no matter the size or shape, located outside Refuge boundaries
These will help protect and augment wildlife populations
for future generations of Americans to enjoy. Thank you.
