Biomedical scientists everywhere need access to resources, including laboratories, technologies,
research centers, and animal models.
At the core of this effort is NCRR, the National Center
for Research Resources. Accelerating research across the country, NCRR’s investments bring
together innovative research teams and harness the power of shared resources, increasing
opportunities to improve human health.
Fundamental to health advances are animal models that
bridge the gap between basic science and human medicine. NCRR supports specialized animal
research facilities and develops models ranging from worms to squid; zebra fish to swine; and
mice to primates. These models are essential for studying human development, behavior, and
disease.
Technology is critical throughout all stages of biomedical research, from basic
discovery to clinical application. NCRR-funded researchers create cutting-edge technologies to
meet this ever-growing need, revealing the inner workings of cells and the human body in ways
previously unimaginable.
Scientists need to share data and images among multiple sites to solve
problems collectively that can’t be solved alone. NCRR transcends geographic boundaries and
research disciplines to create new hardware, software, and a culture of team science, forging
connections among scientists, health care providers, and communities.
NCRR programs build research capabilities at underserved colleges
and universities, increasing the number of
minority scientists engaged in biomedical research and focusing on diseases that
disproportionately affect minority populations. Other grant programs strengthen the
institutional capability and infrastructure in states with rural and sparse populations.
NCRR is inspiring the next generation of biomedical
researchers by funding educational programs in communities both large and small.
These programs expose students to the life sciences through
interactive museum exhibits, educational materials, and travelling laboratories.
For today’s researchers, NCRR offers training and
mentoring programs that benefit research clinicians and
veterinary scientists, as well as programs to ensure that a pipeline of researchers is prepared
to meet the challenges of translating basic discoveries to the clinic and into community
practice.
Through a national consortium of academic health centers, NCRR is leading the Clinical
and Translational Science Award program, enabling team science across disciplines, designing
state-of-the-art informatics tools, improving research training and mentoring, and building new
partnerships with public and private health care organizations.
NCRR is transforming the practice of clinical and translational science,
allowing researchers to provide new treatments
more efficiently and quickly to patients across the country.
NCRR’s network of scientists, clinicians, engineers, students, and communities are
part of an expanding collaborative
environment harnessing innovation to advance human health.
