This market was restored in 1941 by Lütfü Kırdar.
In 1950 my father sets up a spice shop here.
In those times when setting up a spice shop,
someone who new that business very well was Medineli Sir Hafız Osman.
I was a child. He would come and sit here. He was the master of spices and herbalist.
They would have learnt many things from him.
We would try and sell only the best quality spices at our shop.
Black pepper, cinnamon, allspice, cumin…We had our own mill.
We would even mill under the inspection of our master miller...
Chinese cinnamon, that's special. We'll mill that.
For example, if we find pimento we'll mill Jamaican pimento.
If we can't find any, Mexican is nice too, we'll mill that.
I drink in the mornings… But I try not to drink as much as possible…
Cinnamon powder? What is this good for?...
It balances sugar.
For instance, for colds use linden.
One stick of cinnamon, one root of ginger, one root of galangal, and it will cure many things.
But other than that, for broader illnesses,
this is good for this, infuse it this much, stir it this much…this is irrelevant.
