Let’s review what it means to complete a module
and take a proctored assessment.
0:00:06.000,0:00:11.066
We’ll start with a quick reminder of how ALEKS
works? ALEKS has given you an initial
0:00:11.066,0:00:17.033
assessment to see what skills/topics you already
know.
0:00:17.033,0:00:25.066
Based on this information, ALEKS determined the
skills/topics that you are ‘ready-to-learn’. After a
0:00:25.066,0:00:32.066
learning period, the “doing of math homework”,
ALEKS takes the time to re-assess your skills to
0:00:32.066,0:00:38.000
inform you of your progress and ensure the
topics you are doing in homework are
appropriate.
0:00:38.000,0:00:43.066
The learning-assessment-learning cycle
continues until you have
0:00:43.066,0:00:50.000
complete the module. Then you will be
assessed one more time in a proctored setting to
0:00:50.000,0:00:57.000
ensure that you have retained the necessary
skills to demonstrate mastery of the module.
0:00:57.000,0:01:05.066
The visual representation of content in ALEKS is
an ALEKS MyPie. There will be five
0:01:05.066,0:01:12.000
ALEKS Pies. Each ALEKS Pie contains the
content for two modules PLUS key pre-requisite
0:01:12.000,0:01:20.000
concepts. Specifically, each MyPie consists of
15 pre-requisite topics, 33 topics
0:01:20.000,0:01:29.066
for an odd module and 33 topics for an even
module. Now, for the big questions…. How do
you
0:01:29.066,0:01:35.000
complete a module? How do you demonstrate
mastery of a module? These are the two
0:01:35.000,0:01:40.066
things you need to do for each module: complete
and demonstrate mastery!
0:01:40.066,0:01:43.000
Let’s pick a single MyPie….
0:01:43.000,0:01:54.066
This MyPie is for Modules 5 & 6. In this MyPie,
there are 15 topics which you are already
0:01:54.033,0:02:02.066
expected to know…pre-requisite topics. Then 33
topics for Module 5 and 33 topics for
0:02:02.066,0:02:11.000
Module 6.
What does it mean to complete an odd module,
which is this case is Module 5?
0:02:11.000,0:02:19.000
Completion of an odd module means you must
show mastery of 59% of the MyPie in the learning
0:02:19.000,0:02:28.033
and assessment modes in ALEKS. Since 59%
is about 48 topics of the total 81 topics,
0:02:28.033,0:02:37.000
it means you must work in your MyPie until it says
you have mastery of ‘48 of 81 topics.’
0:02:37.000,0:02:44.033
As soon as you reach 48….you have worked the
topics in the odd module, Module 5 in this
0:02:44.033,0:02:48.000
example. THEN what?!
0:02:48.000,0:02:55.066
You are ready for a proctored assessment to
demonstrate your mastery of this module. Take a
0:02:55.066,0:03:02.033
look at the proctored assessment schedule and
find a time that works for you. If you don’t
0:03:02.033,0:03:08.000
have the schedule handy, you can find it by going
to the Pre-Core Math Program
0:03:08.000,0:03:16.033
Information page. In ALEKS, click Resources
and click on the “PCM program Information”
0:03:16.033,0:03:18.000
link.
0:03:18.000,0:03:25.000
There is a schedule for the Little Rock and
Benton campus. We have tried to offer a
0:03:25.000,0:03:33.000
variety of times with a limited budget. I’m sure
you’ll be able to find a time that can work for you.
0:03:33.000,0:03:39.066
When you take a proctored assessment, you
must follow normal testing procedures. A
0:03:39.066,0:03:47.066
picture ID is required to take an assessment. It
can be a driver’s license or campus ID.
0:03:47.066,0:03:55.066
You are only allowed to use the ALEKS
calculator. No handhelds calculators or other
computer
0:03:55.066,0:04:01.033
calculator is permitted. All of your belongs
should be placed on the tables (or
0:04:01.033,0:04:09.033
bookshelves) away from your testing area.
Finally, absolutely no notes are allowed
0:04:09.033,0:04:16.033
and no help of any kind. This is a test where you
are demonstrating YOUR knowledge of
0:04:16.033,0:04:23.066
material. If any student is caught attempting to
get help in any way, the assessment will
0:04:23.066,0:04:30.066
be cancelled and the university dishonesty
procedures will be followed. One common
situation
0:04:30.066,0:04:36.000
is having your cell phone while taking the test.
ALL belongings are to be placed
0:04:36.000,0:04:42.000
away from the testing area…including cell
phones. If you are caught with your cell
0:04:42.000,0:04:48.033
phone, this is considered attempting to get help
on a test.
0:04:48.033,0:04:51.000
Now what about even modules?
0:04:51.000,0:04:59.000
Here is the MyPie for Modules 7 & 8. Again in this
MyPie, there are 15 topics which you are
0:04:59.000,0:05:07.000
already expected to know…pre-requisite topics.
Then 33 topics for Module 7 and
0:05:07.000,0:05:15.000
33 topics for Module 8.
Completion of an even module means you must
show
0:05:15.000,0:05:23.000
mastery of 100% of the MyPie in the learning and
assessment modes in ALEKS. Since 100% is
0:05:23.000,0:05:33.066
all the topics, it means you must work in your
MyPie until it says you have mastery of ‘81
0:05:33.066,0:05:41.033
of 81 topics.’ As soon as you reach 81….you
have worked the topics in the even module,
0:05:41.033,0:05:47.000
Module 8 in this example and you are ready for a
proctored assessment.
0:05:47.000,0:05:56.000
When you find a time that works, you will
probably have a day or two to study. This is good
0:05:56.000,0:06:00.000
and studying/reviewing in ALEKS does count
towards your weekly hours.
0:06:00.000,0:06:06.066
There are a few ways to study in ALEKS. The
REVIEW area may have a few topics that ALEKS
0:06:06.066,0:06:14.066
has identified for you to review and then it shows
all the topics you have completed
0:06:14.066,0:06:25.000
in the MyPie. From this list, be sure to pick those
DIFFICULT problems…not the ones you know
how to do.
0:06:25.000,0:06:33.066
Another study option in ALEKS is the
ASSIGNMENTS tab. In this area, “mini quizzes”
have been
0:06:33.066,0:06:40.066
provided to give you an alternative type of
studying experience. Notice, these are
0:06:40.066,0:06:45.066
labeled “Practice Only”. The results are not used
in determining your course grade
0:06:45.066,0:06:54.000
in any way….this is only for you as a study tool
while you are waiting to take a proctored
assessment.
0:06:54.000,0:07:00.033
The next class announcement will talk in detail
about interpreting your proctored assessment
0:07:00.033,0:07:07.066
results and your next steps after an assessment.
But all of this information is given
0:07:07.066
concisely in the syllabus.
Now, it’s time to get to work and … Do the Math!
