Ngati Raukawa's haka group Motai Tangata Rau
stunned the sell-out crowd of 6000 at Te Papanui in Hamilton
for the Tainui kapa haka regionals
taking the title for the first time.
Four groups have qualified
and will represent Tainui at Te Matatini in 2015.
Motai Tangata Rau stirred the crowd of 6000.
To hear the crowd cheer
makes all our hard work every week
and every weekend worth it.
Strong performers Te Iti Kahurangi were second.
The Ngati Haua settlement
was an important aspect of our entry.
What I was taught by Meto Hopa
inspired us to use feathers to represent quills.
From Turangawaewae Marae,
Te Pou o Mangatawhiri came third.
Coming in fourth with their smooth singing was Nga Pou o Roto.
There was a purpose behind the carrying of the pig
for Motai Tangata Rau.
I changed our exit
in response to the government's lack of funding given
to commemorate the battles in NZ's history.
I likened it to the pig
where they spend millions on commemorating wars
that took place overseas.
How much money will be spent
on commemorating World War I next year?
So that's the message behind our item.
Potaka Maipi, Te Karere.
