NARRATOR: So you are going to meet with the professor whose class you are supporting.
You are not guaranteed that the professor you had taken the class with is going to be
the same one that you will SI for.
Even so, it is important to meet any professor with professionalism.
It is important to clarify your role as a SI to the professor. Explain to them what
a SI leader is and what it isn’t.
A SI leader is not A TA, you are not a grader
You can’t tell the professor who came to SI and who didn’t as SI is confidential
for students Another professor - you can’t teach the
class in absence of the professor
A SI leader is A helper for the students, you are there to
guide them Can work with the professor to reinforce an
area of struggle for the students. Can discuss generally what went on in SI to
notify the professor of any subject area struggles
It is important to meet with your professor regularly to make sure that what you are doing
in SI and what is done in class go hand in hand.
If you are confronted with something by the professor you feel uncomfortable with, for
example they want you to grade papers for them even though you said you couldn’t,
consult a supervisor to discuss a plan of action.
It is important to get to know your professor because together you can form a partnership
that will better help the students you are both supporting!
Before you meet with your professor don’t forget to:
[pause] Send an introductory email, to clarify your
role with the professor and to tell them more about you!
Come to class a little early to meet or talk with the professor
And always remember professionalism!
